This Bachelor of Education Elementary Post-Degree program is a 16-month program that earns you a (BEd) degree and prepares you to teach in elementary/middle years classrooms (kindergarten to grade 7). Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to apply for a BC Teaching Certificate.
To be eligible for this program, you must complete the academic (course, grade, bachelor's degree) and experience requirements listed below.
Important dates
- Submit your application by January 2
- Complete and submit your 75 experience hours (experience requirement) by January 2
- Complete all academic (course, grade, and degree) requirements by April 30
Academic requirements
Note: Each required course listed refers to a half-year course worth 1.5 UVic units, which is equivalent to 3-4 credits at some BC colleges and universities.
The Undergraduate Admissions Office will determine your eligibility for admission to UVic when you apply.
Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
English grade requirement: UVic C+ (3.00 on the UVic 9‑point scale) minimum in each course
You'll need:
- One literature course paired with a literature or composition course
- At least one course that satisfies UVic’s Academic Writing Requirement if you haven't satisfied it already
- Courses taught by an English department
We cannot accept:
- Foundational/preparatory courses that do not satisfy UVic's Academic Writing Requirement
- Courses in business/technical writing, communications, creative writing, journalism, linguistics or some cultural studies topics
- Courses from an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
You'll need:
- Courses focused on the Canadian experience that cover topics taught in the BC elementary social studies curriculum.
- Courses that cover the whole of Canada, but we may be able to accept up to one course covering only part of Canada.
We cannot accept:
- Courses with Canadian literature, art history or fine arts topics (e.g UVic CS 101)

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
Math grade requirement: UVic C+ or 3.00 minimum average between both courses
You'll need:
- At least one course that was completed no more than ten years before program entry,
- Courses taught by a math department
We cannot accept:
- Pre-calculus or introductory college algebra topics.
- Social science courses (such as economics, geography, pscyhology or sociology courses) that cover math related content.
Notes:
- You may take a maximum of one approved statistics course (1.5 units) if it is from a Math department

Two approved courses (1.5 UVic units each)
You'll need:
- Courses that focused on science topics taught in the BC elementary science curriculum.
- At least one course that was completed no more than ten years before program entry.
We cannot accept:
- Social sciences courses such as anthropology, psychology and most geography courses. We may be able to accept a physical geography course (science focus, not social science).
- It's recommended that you take courses with a lab. This helps prepare you for the classroom because elementary teachers use a field-based, hands-on approach to teaching sciences.
- It's recommended that you take courses in two different approved science subjects.
- You may take a maximum of one approved human science/anatomy/physiology course (1.5 units).

Your grade requirement will be calculated on your:
12.0 unit sessional GPA
- UVic calculates this sessional GPA using your most recent session
- If that session includes fewer than 12.0 units of graded studies (8 typical UVic courses), then we will use your prior sessional average(s) to total 12.0 units.
30.0 unit sessional GPA
- UVic calculates this sessional GPA using your most recent 30 units (20 typical UVic courses) to December 31.

Competitive Application Selection
For September 2026 entry we will determine admission to the program primarily using GPA, as long as you have met all admission requirements.
Admissions into the UVic Teacher Education Program is competitive. Please note that meeting the minimum admission requirements is not a guarantee of admission.
Experience requirement
In addition to the above academic requirements, students must have a minimum of 75 hours of practical paid or volunteer experience working with children/youth in educative ways.
