Microsoft Stream (on SharePoint) Transition

Microsoft is retiring its Stream (Classic) video hosting service and it will be replaced by a new experience, Stream (on SharePoint). Stream (on SharePoint) is built right into apps across the M365 cloud service and allows users to upload their videos directly to SharePoint Online, Teams, or OneDrive. Simply upload videos to any of these services, just like you would with any other file, and you will be able to view, share, and create transcriptions for your videos. Use the new Stream (on SharePoint) start page at https://stream.office.com to see all your videos and meeting recordings stored in M365.

Beginning August 15th, 2023, users of the Stream (Classic) video hosting service will no longer be able to upload new content to the Stream (Classic) service and it will become read-only. Any newly created user content should be uploaded to SharePoint, Teams, or OneDrive.

All users of the Stream (Classic) service should begin deleting or downloading their videos as soon as possible. The Stream (Classic) service is expected to become inaccessible on January 2 2024 and your videos will become unavailable for download.

Choose a new storage location

Before downloading your Stream (Classic) videos, you should first choose the location where you will store them once downloaded. We recommend you store them in the M365 Cloud service (i.e., Stream (on SharePoint)) or Echo 360. If you are storing your videos in the M365 Cloud service we recommend you create a folder in an appropriate SharePoint Online site, in your OneDrive storage, or in a Team, to store your videos. Remember to consider if any content within the video may be confidential and should not be shared with others.

Downloading videos from Stream (Classic)

Note that this method exclusively downloads the video file as an mp4 file and does not download the metadata or transcription data associated with the video. If you would like to retain metadata or transcription data, please contact the Computer Help Desk.

To download your videos as mp4 files:

  1. Login to Microsoft Stream (Classic) at https://web.microsoftstream.com/ with your NetlinkID and passphrase.
  2. Navigate to My Content and select Videos to see all your video content.
  3. Review the videos in your list and identify the videos you want to keep.
  4. Click the Ellipsis (…) button beside a given video.
  5. If you no longer wish to keep a video, we recommend deleting it. To do so, select Delete from the drop-down menu.
  6. To download a video, click the Ellipsis button and choose Download video from the drop-down menu. Note that each video needs to be deleted or downloaded individually.
  7. Where this video will download will depend on your browser’s settings. You will either be prompted to choose a location, or it will download into a pre-determined location, such as your Downloads folder. Once the video has been downloaded, copy or move the video to where you would like to store it in SharePoint, Teams, or OneDrive. Once safely stored in one of these three locations, the video will have been migrated to Stream (on SharePoint).
