Maintenance Window

Start: Saturday May 10, 2014 09:00
End: Saturday May 10, 2014 17:00

Downtime and Degraded Service During the Maintenance

Up to 5 hours of downtime for most campus research connectivity (including lightpaths from CANARIE, dedicated VLANs from BCNET and access to and from all research sites outside of British Columbia) is expected during the maintenance window.
Access to TRIUMF and universities within BC will be degraded.

Upgrade Details

CANARIE 100 Gigabit Core Network Upgrade - BCNET VICTX Upgrade
CANARIE, the national research network provider is upgrading their optical multiplexing equipment located at the BCNET Victoria Transit Exchange (VICTX) on May 10th. A completely new chassis will need to be installed in order to upgrade the network to 100GE technology.


NETS will be contacting and communicating with the affected research groups directly in order to provide more details in advance. We will also notify research groups and update this informed once the maintenance is completed on May 10th.

Commodity Internet Access

This upgrade will have no effect on commodity internet access. Some research sites usually reached over the dedicated research network may be available over the commodity internet during the maintenance window.

Enhanced Virus Checking on Inbound Email Servers

Will apply additional virus/spam/phishing detection on the inbound edge sendmail servers.

Effective 2 hours from now: Required system updates will be applied to two of the three farm '' Windows Terminal Servers beginning at 19:00 PDT, Thursday, April 24, 2014:


The services and client groups affected by the system updates include:

-, Windows Terminal Services users

Active users of the two servers will be notified with an in-session message 15 minutes prior to being logged out. Disconnected, logged out, or new connections to '' will be directed to the third server 'moose' which has already been updated and is not affected by this maintenance.

Regular service will resume by 21:00 PDT.
