Meet Gabe S.
About
Hi there! My name is Gabe (he/him). I was born and raised in Vancouver on the traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples where I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia. I currently reside in the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees) and Xʷsepsəm (Esquimalt) peoples.
I am of mixed Chinese and German ancestry. Outside of counselling, I enjoy playing and watching a wide variety of sports, learning new languages, exercising, cooking (and eating!), spending time with friends and family, and finding ways to reconnect with my heritage.
Counselling approach
As a practicum counsellor, I work from a person-centered approach, grounded in the belief that individuals are the experts of their own lives. I see the counselling process as a space to draw out that inner knowledge and explore new perspectives and possibilities together. I also integrate Narrative Therapy, as I believe each person carries a unique story that can be explored, understood, and re-authored as part of navigating life’s challenges. I also use Motivational Interviewing to support individuals in connecting with their values, building motivation, and making meaningful changes at their own pace.
In addition, I incorporate techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as strengths-based and solution-focused approaches. My aim is to provide a space that encourages growth, while also helping to build the skills needed to manage challenges and deepen self-understanding.
In session, you can expect a warm, welcoming space where you’ll feel heard and supported, while also receiving practical, goal-oriented strategies. I take time to listen to your story and work collaboratively to find approaches that support your progress. My focus is on identifying your needs and creating a counselling plan that aligns with your main concerns and goals.
I have experience—and a particular interest—in working with students from diverse backgrounds, as I have previously worked with immigrant and refugee communities. I also have experience supporting current and former athletes, and understand the unique pressures and transitions that come with sport and performance.
