Meet Emily S.
About
Hello! My name is Emily (she/her), and I am a Practicum Counsellor at the Student Wellness Centre. I have settler ancestry (Irish, Scottish, and English) and live and work on the traditional, unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples.
I enjoy music, comedy (stand-up and improv), and spending time with dogs, for the ways they bring presence and laughter. It is also important to me to try new things, connect with friends, family, and the natural world, and continue expanding my knowledge of local ice cream and coffee shops.
Counselling approach
I have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds in crisis response, harm reduction, domestic violence support, and disability support. These experiences shape my counselling approach, which is collaborative and strengths-focused, with deep respect for the courage it takes to reach out. I strive to show up in a way that is trauma-attuned, neurodivergent-affirming, and anti-oppressive, and I welcome feedback in our work together.
My current training is in Narrative Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. These approaches can support people to explore the stories they carry about themselves and their experiences, while connecting to their unique goals, values, and strengths. I also incorporate Somatic approaches, which attune to the needs of the body and nervous system. I believe our bodies hold wisdom that can be accessed through the practice of slowing down and noticing, especially in the presence of safe connection. It is my hope that in our time together, you feel seen and supported.
