Remark help guide
About the tool
Remark is an application for scanning and grading bubble sheet assessments. This guide provides instructions for scanning, processing, and exporting results using Remark.
Please note
LTI and UVic Systems no longer provide in-person teaching support for the use of Remark software. However, self-help resources remain available through this guide to assist instructors with using the software.
Getting started
Before you begin, you will need:- A Windows computer with Remark Office OMR installed. It is not compatible with MacOS: If you do not have access to a Windows computer, sign up for the Generic Remote Desktop Service
- Supply of new forms for your exam which can be obtained through your department or through UVic Printing and Duplicating Services
- Answer key form
- One blank form
- Completed answer form
- Completed student forms
For best results, use the following settings on your scanner:
- File format: .TIF or .TIFF (recommended over PDF for faster processing)
- Color mode: Black & White
- Image type: OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
- Scan and send the following documents as three separate batches using same scanner settings and during same scanning session:
- Blank form
- Completed answer key
- Completed student forms
- Once you receive the scanned files, download and store them in a secure location
- Your scanned files are now ready to be imported into Remark
Create a template
Before Remark can process your exams, you must create a form template for each type of bubble sheet you plan to use. The template tells Remark how to recognize student IDs, questions, and response areas on the form.
The instructions below use the UVic A (Blue) bubble sheet as an example. If you are using a different form type, such as UVic B (Green) or UVic C (White), you will need to adjust the template settings to match that form's layout and response options.
- UVic A (Blue): Up to 200 questions with 5 response options per question
- UVic B (Green): Up to 100 questions with 10 response options per question
- UVic C (White): Up to 120 questions with bubbled student names and 5 response options per question
Once your template is configured and saved, it can be reused whenever you process exams that use the same bubble sheet format.
Note: If student names are required, it is recommended to use the white sheets, and the OMR software cannot read handwritten fields.
Step-by-step instructions

To create a template for a 60-question test with the UVIC A bubble sheet form (BLUE form: No bubbled-in names, up to 5 response alternatives per question, up to 200 questions), you need to set up different Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) regions for student identification (V numbers) and the questions.
