Echo360 help guide

About the tool

Echo360 is UVic's lecture capture and video management platform. It enables instructors to record, upload, manage, and share course videos with students through Brightspace.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for using Echo360's core features, including creating and managing recordings, sharing content with students, and accessing recordings through Brightspace.

Please note

The documentation below primarily applies to instructors. For student documentation, see our guide on UVicLearn or contact the Computer Help Desk for technical issues.

Getting started

More than 140 centrally scheduled classrooms at UVic are equipped with standard lecture recording technology. Most centrally booked classrooms support basic recording and capture of classroom activities.

Recording sources include:

  • In-room Windows PC connected to the AV system
  • Lapel microphone or webcam audio
  • Webcam and screen capture

Not all classrooms are equipped for lecture recording. This may be due to equipment limitations or because the existing classroom technology does not support recording.

If you are teaching in a classroom that is not recording-enabled there, there are several ways to support students who are unable to attend class or who wish to review course material:

Some instructors also choose to record lectures using Echo360 or Zoom on a personal laptop. Keep in mind that recording quality may vary depending on factors such as Wi‑Fi performance, microphone and camera placement, ambient noise, and classroom lighting.

Classrooms may not be recording-enabled due to equipment limitations or because the existing classroom technology infrastructure does not support recording installations.

University Systems provides help for audiovisual equipment in all general use classrooms.

Creating and uploading content

Basic classroom recordings typically capture the instructor's audio and video, along with any digital content displayed through the classroom AV system, such as PowerPoint presentations, websites, or a document camera.

For the best recording quality, use the webcam or lapel microphone provided in the room. Keep in mind that content that is located farther from the camera, audio from elsewhere in the classroom (including most student questions and comments), and writing on whiteboards or chalkboards may not be captured clearly or consistently.

  1. Sign in to the classroom computer using your UVic NetLink ID and password
  2. Set up any accessories you plan to use, such as the lapel microphone located in the AV cabinet
  3. Open Echo360 Universal Capture and enter your primary @uvic.ca email address
  4. Enter a recording title. This title will appear in your Echo360 library after the recording is uploaded.
  5. Add a description (optional)
  6. Review the recording inputs and confirm that:
    • The correct video sources are selected
    • Audio levels are active and responding to sound
    • If no inputs are available, restart the computer and try again
  7. Set the capture duration to match the length of your class
  8. Select the desired recording quality (the default setting is High)
  9. Choose where the recording will be uploaded: your personal Echo360 library, or specific Echo360 course
  10. Complete any remaining recording settings
  11. Select Start Recording
When your class is finished, select Stop Recording to ensure the recording uploads successfully and becomes available in Echo360.

Universal capture is pre-installed on all Classroom resident computers. Before, you begin recording you will need to set specific details including the name, location, quality and any inputs (e.g. mic and screen, webcam).

Configure your capture details

  1. Open Universal Capture
  2. Log in
  3. Select Inputs (e.g. webcam, monitor, and mic)
  4. Select the pencil icon to give it a name
  5. Enter a Title
  6. Enter a Description
  7. Select Publish To and choose a location to save your file
  8. Click Save

Echo360 allows instructors to upload and share recorded lectures, video tutorials, presentations, and other media with students through Brightspace.

Supported file types include:

  • Video: MP4, M4V, MTS, WMV, MOV, AVI, FLV, MKV
  • Audio: MP3, M4A, MKA, AIFF
  • Presentations: PDF, PPT, PPTX

Upload a media file

  • Log in to Brightspace
  • From the navigation bar, select Echo360 Media
  • Select Create
  • Choose Upload Media
  • Drag and drop your file, or select Files to Upload
  • Select Upload

Important: Do not close the upload window until the upload is complete. Closing the window will cancel the upload.

Once uploaded, the file will appear in your Echo360 Library while it is being processed. Newly uploaded files may appear dimmed until processing is complete. If you do not see your file right away, refresh the page.

Zoom cloud recordings can be automatically added to your Echo360 media library in Brightspace, where they can be managed, edited, and shared with students.

When you start a Zoom recording, you will be prompted to choose a recording location:

  • Record to the Cloud: The recording is automatically added to your Echo360 media library
  • Record Locally: The recording is saved to your computer and is not automatically uploaded to Echo360
Using cloud recording is recommended if you plan to share or manage your recordings through Echo360.

Editing and accessibility features

EchoVideo includes built-in editing tools that let you refine recordings without needing to create a new video. You can:

  1. Customize thumbnails to choose the image displayed for your video
  2. Trim the beginning or end of a recording to remove setup time, pauses, or unwanted content
  3. Split a recording into multiple videos
  4. Remove specific sections from within a video
  5. Insert additional audio or video clips into an existing recording
  6. Add, remove, or replace audio and video tracks to update or enhance your media
These editing tools are available directly from your EchoVideo library and can be used to improve recordings before sharing them with students.

Closed captions are generated from the automatic transcript created by the system. To display captions on a video, you must enable closed captions for that recording.

  1. Go to Library and find the video
  2. Click the 3 dots and then select More Actions and then select Edit Transcript
  3. Click the Edit Transcript button
  4. Click the Apply to CC button
  5. View the video and click the CC icon to view the captions

Echo360 automatically generates searchable, interactive transcripts that help students navigate and review video content. Transcripts are not automatically published as closed captions. Closed captions must be enabled after reviewing and editing the transcript.

  1. Go to your Echo360 Library and locate the video
  2. Select the three dots (More Actions) next to the video
  3. Choose Edit Transcript
  4. Select Edit Transcript again to begin making changes
