American Sign Language

Offered in partnership with Continuing Studies, the Certificate in American Sign Language (ASL) develops a conversational level of ASL and a knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the culture of the Deaf community. Please note this is a credit program.
Participants in the program gain an awareness of, and sensitivity to, linguistic and cultural diversity, enhancing their intercultural communicative and cultural competence.
Program requirements
Four required courses:
- ASL 100A: American Sign Language I
- ASL 100B: American Sign Language II
- ASL 200A: American Sign Language III
- ASL 200B: American Sign Language IV
Three elective courses chosen from:
- ASL 300A: American Sign Language V
- ASL 300B American Sign Language VI
- LING 345: Sign Language as Language
- LING 373: Second Language Acquisition
- LING 397: Issues in Cross-Cultural Communication

UVic ASL Club
The UVic ASL Club hosts regular meet-ups where all conversations are held in ASL. All levels are welcome, from beginners to fluent signers.
