Vehicle access & parking

Introduction

This page has information for contractors about using and parking motor vehicles and access to buildings on the UVic campus.

UVic is designed as a pedestrian-oriented campus. If you operate a vehicle on campus, you're  responsible for driving and parking in a way that's safe, courteous and avoids conflict with pedestrian traffic.

Make sure you understand the terms used in these documents.

What is this?

These web pages are based on the UVic Health, Safety and Environmental Handbook for University Contractors, the authoritative guide to the responsibilities of contractors working at UVic. The content has been simplified and optimized for viewing on mobile devices and quick reference.

Parking

Campus Security (CSEC) manages parking services on campus. All of UVic's traffic and parking regulations apply to contractors, even with a Restricted Area Permit. Parking is not permitted:

  • on roads, grass areas, boulevards, and sidewalks
  • adjacent to yellow curbs
  • at building entrances
  • in loading zones (except when loading and unloading, and for no longer than necessary)
  • any other area not designated for parking

Generally, UVic doesn't provide free parking for contractors and their employees. You may purchase either long-term or short-term parking permits for company and worker-owned vehicles. For large projects, we may permit company-owned vehicles to be parked within a fenced-off work area.

Restricted & prohibited areas

Restricted areas

Regular vehicle traffic is restricted to designated roadways and parking lots.

The service roads, loading zones and shared zones within Ring Road are all restricted areas. Vehicle access to restricted areas is limited to:

  • marked vehicles belonging to UVic, utility companies, and the municipalities of Saanich and Oak Bay
  • marked delivery vehicles (service roads to designated loading areas only)
  • vehicles with Restricted Area Permits

If you need access to restricted areas for contract work, apply to Campus Security for a permit.

Prohibited areas

Even with a Restricted Area Permit, motor vehicles aren't permitted:

  • in the main quad
  • on pathways
  • on turf areas
  • on trails

Don't enter emergency zones without permission from both Campus Security and your FMGT Representative.

Refer to the pedestrian priority map PDF for designated roadways, parking lots, pathways, service roads, loading zones and shared zones.

Speed limits

The speed limits on the UVic campus are, unless otherwise posted:

  • 30 km/h for roads
  • 15 km/h for parking lots and service roads
  • 8 km/h for other restricted areas

Road obstructions

Don't obstruct roads or parking lots with parked vehicles, trailers, or heavy machinery. If your work requires that a road be partially or completely closed, you must receive permission ahead of time from both Campus Security and your FMGT Representative. More about road closures.
