Accessibility

Our responsibilities

Facilities Management participates in UVic's accessibility committee. We're responsible for accessibility in UVic's physical environment. We:

  • Respond to physical accessibility concerns and recommendations.
  • Supply barrier-free furniture for long- and short-term requests.
  • Maintain building equipment such as elevators and automatic door opening devices.
  • Consult and plan for an accessible environment in regards to physical building features, university grounds, and specific needs for individuals on campus.
  • Interpret building code standards to maximize access for all.
  • Manage accessibility improvement projects.

Report a barrier

You can report accessibility barriers in UVic's built environment. We're responsible for maintenance of UVic buildings and grounds including:

  • elevators and power door openers
  • height-adjustable desks and accessible furniture in classrooms
  • wayfinding signage and maps
  • pathways and building entrances

You can report anonymously or provide contact information so we can follow up with you.

Classrooms

Beyond the accessibility requirements in the BC Building Code, UVic has additional standards for classroom design. For example:

  • All classrooms have reserved seating for students with a disability.
  • Most classrooms have at least 1 height-adjustable desk and chair.
  • Large classrooms and lecture theatres have a height-adjustable lectern for instructors.
  • Desks and tables have a minimum of 685 mm (27 in.) of clearance.

Go to our classroom search for more detailed information about the furniture, layout and AV system in your classroom.

RHF audits

We conduct building audits using the Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF) criteria and aim for all new constructions to meet the conditions of RHF Accessibility Certified Gold certification.
