Interdisciplinary programs

The Department of Computer Science has collaborated with several other departments at UVic to create combined degree programs. These four year Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees apply the knowledge gained from computer science courses to another subject area such as music or psychology.

Advising

These programs are not offered through the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. Students who are interested in declaring one of these programs or are seeking academic advice should contact the appropriate Faculty or School's advising centre:

Program information

Geography (Geomatics)

The Combined degree in Computer Science and Geography is known as Geomatics. Geomatics is one of the world's fastest growing technology sectors.

GIS and GPS technologies, as well as web-based services, are increasingly used in industry and in our everyday lives.

Graduates work in government agencies, forestry, agriculture, mining, surveying, resource and environmental management, oceanography, hydrography, urban planning, business planning, transportation, defence, medical epidemiology, and in software and application development, to name but a few.

More information and academic advising for the geomatics program is available through the Department of Geography's website.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:  Combined Program in Geography and Computer Science.

, Combined Program Advisor for Geography/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined geography/CSC program.

Health Information Science

The Combined degree in Computer Science and Health Information Science connects studies in the organization of health care systems involving health informatics with the fundamentals of software engineering, operating systems, programming languages, and computer hardware.

In the combined degree program, there is less emphasis on the administrative side of health informatics and more emphasis placed on the technical aspects in health care systems.

Details of this program are available on the Faculty of Human & Social Development, School of Health Information Science website.

  • Enrollment in this program is limited.
  • This program has a mandatory Co-op program.
  • You will graduate with a BSc from the Faculty of Human & Social Development.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:   Combined Major in Health Information Science and Computer Science.

TBD, Combined Program Advisor for Health Information Science/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined health information science/CSC program.

Mathematics

The study of computer science and mathematics is interrelated, as the field of computer science developed from mathematics.  Frequently, computer science research involves collaboration with mathematics.

The study of mathematics provides you with specific knowledge that you may build on, e.g. techniques in applied mathematics or statistical methods.

Employers understand that mathematics graduates can handle intellectually difficult problems and that this ability can be transferred to the work environment. Other skills include thinking logically and quantitatively, numeracy and analyzing information.

  • This combined degree program includes the essential courses for both a mathematics and computer science degree.
  • Co-op placements are sourced through the Faculty of Engineering Co-op.
  • You will graduate with a Bachelor of Science (BSc), major or honours, from the Faculty of Science.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:   Combined Major or Honours in Mathematics and Computer Science OR Combined Major or Honours in Statistics and Computer Science.

Combined Program Advisor for Math/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined math/CSC program.

Music

The Combined degree in Music and Computer Science is for students who intend to work with both music and technology. Musicians and computer scientists work together to develop and apply new technologies in the world of music and the study of sound.

Full details on this program are available on the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Music website.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:  Combined Major in Music and Computer Science.

, Combined Program Advisor for Music/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined music/CSC program.

Physics

The study of computer science and physics will provide you with a grounding in quantitative thinking and analysis, skills which can be applied in many fields (science, technology, finance) and are highly sought after in our technology-driven world.

The program introduces you to a broad range of problem-solving techniques, including the use of mathematics, computers, electronics and the experimental method.

  • The combined degree program includes the essential courses for both a Physics and a Computer Science degree.
  • In this program, you are able to access co-op placements from the Faculty of Engineering Co-op.
  • You will graduate with a Bachelor of Science (BSc); major or honours, from the Faculty of Science.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:   Combined Major or Honours in Physics and Computer Science.

, Combined Program Advisor Physics/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined physics/CSC program.

Psychology

Psychology and Computer Science enjoy a growing interdisciplinary relationship. Psychological concepts are important in designing effective user interfaces for software/hardware, for understanding and working with artificial intelligence, in methods of biological perception, and in determining neural modes of computation.

Careers for you with these skills can be found in software and hardware design, robotics, medical technology, bio and psycho metrics, evaluation and rehabilitation, artificial intelligence systems, and research -- to name just a few areas.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:   Combined Major in Psychology and Computer Science.

, Combined Program Advisor for Psychology/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined psychology/CSC program.

Visual Arts

The Combined degree in Visual Arts and Computer Science is for students who intend to work with technology and painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital media or video.

The computer has become a major tool and medium for the creation and display of visual arts. The objective of this program is to prepare you to become the new mediators between the digital art and computer science domains. You can utilize your skills to work in the entertainment industry, art galleries and museums, marketing and promotion, as designers and project managers and in multimedia design and production.

Degree requirements for this program are listed in the academic calendar:   Combined Major in Visual Arts and Computer Science.

, Combined Program Advisor for Visual Arts/CSC, is available to assist students interested in the combined program as well as students currently enrolled in the combined visual arts/CSC program.
