About Nubia

Hey, I'm Nubia! I'm originally from Mexico (I speak fluent Spanish!) but grew up in Victoria and I'm a 2026 UVic grad.

I love working with students because I loved being a student, so much so that I spent over eight years as an undergrad at UVic! I went to university straight out of high school as a Physics major, but I changed my program two or three times as I kept discovering new subjects I was interested in. Physics lead to math, math led to computer science, and computer science lead to the co-op program where I got my first permanent job offer before I graduated.

During my time here I also got involved in clubs and I was the treasurer for the UVic Games Club for the last two years of my degree. I still go twice a week to play board games and mahjong on campus!

My advice to future university students

In high school, my favourite teacher told us about how he spent way more than four years getting his physics degree because he took fewer classes and lots of interesting electives. His advice always motivated me not to put a clock on my degree, and so I never hesitated to reduce my course load, change programs or try classes just because they sounded interesting.

I really encourage you to study what you care about and for as long as you want! Taking fewer classes, changing your major, or taking a couple years to figure it out is totally normal. Don't be scared to take the "scenic route."
