I am a Portuguese-Canadian currently living in São Paulo, Brasil. I have lived mostly in Halifax, St. John’s, Victoria, Carora, Venezuela, and Toronto. I completed my M.A., Political Science from York University in 2012 and my thesis topic was participatory democracy, hegemony, neogramscianism. I completed my B.A. (Hons.) from Acadia University, 2011. My honours thesis  focussed on fieldwork conducted in Venezuela investigating counter-hegemonic globalization.

My PhD research concentrates on participatory budgeting in Brasil in an effort to trace alternative forms of political organizing that challenge hegemonic models of democracy and economic governance. I advance a theoretical position drawing on aspects of neo-gramscianism, Marxism, and post-structuralism using a critical realist ontology.

My personal interests are my retriever, Marx, Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, political activism, neuroscience, social and clinical psychology, health, obsessive learning and teaching.
