Dr Kira Hoffman reimagines fire as a force for renewal

The School of Environmental Studies is thrilled to see UVic alum Dr. Kira Hoffman recognized by National Geographic as part of its 2026 “33”, placing her work among a globally recognized group of changemakers.

A fire ecologist working in close partnership with Indigenous communities, Hoffman’s research is helping to reframe how we understand fire—not only as a force of destruction, but as a vital and regenerative part of healthy ecosystems. Through cultural burning practices grounded in long-standing knowledge and relationship to land, her work supports more resilient forests while contributing to a broader shift in how we live with fire.
