James Rowe co-edits new collection on contemplative practice and politics

August 17, 2026

School of Environmental Studies professor Dr. James Rowe has co-edited a new book, Contemplative Praxis and Politics, with Shannon L. Mariotti of Trinity University and Farah Godrej of the University of California, Riverside.

Bringing together contributors from several disciplines, the collection examines the political possibilities and limitations of contemplative practices, including meditation and yoga. It considers how these practices intersect with progressive social movements, justice and collective transformation, while also engaging critically with the commercialization of mindfulness.

Published by Routledge in July 2026, the book offers an interdisciplinary overview of a growing area of research and identifies questions for further study.
