Cuba Ethnographic Field School 2024 – Saber escuchar

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria is organizing another Ethnographic field school in Cuba from May 27th – June 17th, 2024.

This year’s theme is Saber escucharwhich means “to know how to listen”. While exploring ethnographic methodologies, participants will discover some of the unique contemporary cultural practices, social and economic dynamics that characterize the biggest island in the Caribbean. Important Dates:

  • Monday, November 6, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM Thursday, November 9, 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, Cornet Building, room B237: Information sessions.

  • December 8, 2023 - Friday: Application form submitted via the online ap plication.
  • December 18, Friday: Applicants notified of acceptance by email.
  • January 15, 2024, Monday: 50% deposit due in the Anthropology main office Cornett B228 by 4:00pm (refundable only if the field school is cancelled).
  • February 26, 2024 - Monday: Full balance of payment due in the Anthropology main office Cornett B228 by 4:00pm (refundable only if the field school is cancelled).
  • March – 4 days: Intensive mandatory workshops at UVic. Dates TBC. It is possible for students who are not in Victoria to join via zoom. 
  • May 27– June 17, 2024: Field school in Cuba.

Funding:

  • Student International Activities FundThe Student International Activities Fund (SIAF) is intended to assist UVic students with their participation in unpaid, international learning activities. The primary purpose of these activities is to prepare students and graduates for a “global future” as professionals and as informed, responsible and effective citizens in the world.
  • One World International ScholarshipThe BC Scholarship Society offers two international scholarship programs (One World and Premier's*) to assist students who plan to complete some of their course work outside of North America (Canada/United States).
  • The deadlines for both above applications are 4:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of March, July and November. More info here.
