International opportunities

Studying abroad can deepen your understanding of human societies, cultures, histories and ways of knowing while helping you develop the intercultural, research and analytical skills valued by employers, community organizations and graduate programs. Anthropology students have access to a wide range of international learning opportunities through exchange, summer programs and international co-op.

Exchange program

Through UVic's International Centre for Students (ICS) Exchange Program, you can study at one of more than 80 partner universities around the world while earning credit toward your degree and paying UVic tuition.

A few highlights for Anthropology students include:

  • University of Washington (USA) – Anthropology courses have included topics such as archaeology, biological anthropology, museum studies, research methods, food studies and Indigenous knowledge systems.
  • University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK) – Anthropology and archaeology courses have included topics such as museum studies, Scottish archaeology and Viking archaeology.
  • University of Exeter (UK) – Course offerings have included anthropology, archaeology, environment and society, and food studies.
  • University of Manchester (UK) – Course offerings have included ethnography, education, culture and inequality.
  • University of Iceland - Anthropology and related courses have explored topics such as culture, society, identity and the North Atlantic region.
  • Uppsala University (Sweden) – Courses have explored culture, conflict and society.

These are just a few examples of the many opportunities available through the ICS Exchange Program. Whether your interests lie in archaeology, biological anthropology, sociocultural anthropology, Indigenous studies, museum studies or global issues, there are exchange destinations that can complement your academic goals and enrich your understanding of the world.

Field schools

Field schools are experiential, intercultural short-term courses that take you out of the classroom, conducting hands-on study and research in locations across Canada and around the world.

Summer opportunities

Short-term international summer programs allow you to explore ew cultures, gain field-based experience and earn transferable academic credit while staying on track with your degree.

One example is the University of East Anglia Summer University, which gives students the opportunity to study in Norwich while taking courses in areas such as literature, creative writing, media, history and culture.

International co-op

Apply your research, analytical and intercultural skills in a global setting through international co-op opportunities. Working abroad can help you gain professional experience, expand your network and develop cross-cultural competencies that complement an Anthropology degree.
