Awards for anthropology graduate students

Teaching & research assistantships

You can often get a teaching assistant job for 100-120 hours in the fall and spring terms. There are a few teaching assistantships available in the summer term. Call for applications will be sent via email to all current grad students. 

Research assistants (RAs) are hired by faculty members to help with their research. These roles are sometimes called scientific assistants or laboratory instructors. 

RA salaries come from faculty members’ research grants. Because of this, your RA hours, salary and other details are worked out between you and the faculty member.

Anthropology Graduate Pro-D Funding

This departmental grant is for graduate students’ activities which support professional development: travel and registration fees to present at professional conferences, to reimburse research participants for their time, to participate in a workshop, etc.

• be registered full time in ANTH graduate program
• not have received funding from this source in the current fiscal year (April 1 to March 31)
• have also applied for FGS/CUPE funding (if eligible/applicable)

• who are in the first 2 years of their MA program or first 4 years of their PhD program
• who have not previously received funding from this source
• do not have access to other funding (e.g. SSHRC or supervisor))

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to first-time applicants.

The department will not consider:

• incomplete applications
• applications submitted after pro-d activity took place
• applications received more than four months prior to when the funding is needed.

Award amounts
Students can apply for funding up to a maximum of $500.00.

Cancellations
If something changes and you are unable to use the funds, please contact us.
If you have already received your funds, you may be asked to return any funds received.

Note: Students may apply only once per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).

• Strategic Framework Experiential Learning Fund (SF-ELF) - Travel awards for internships and field schools outside Victoria. 
• BC Association of Professional Archaeologists (BCAPCA) - bursaries for students pursuing a degree in archaeology and Indigenous students in any field.  
• Faculty of Social Sciences field course student support fund - Our field schools are subsidized by this fund. No application necessary.
