External scholarships

There are a number of national and provincial granting agencies that annually fund graduate students and their research. These are merit-based fellowships which must be applied for individually. Most of the agencies have specific application guidelines and deadlines.

The funding opportunities below all require an internal pre-selection process coordinated through the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Transcripts required for external competitions

UVic Official Transcripts

Official transcripts for all completed post-secondary study are required for all external scholarship competitions.  Students are responsible to ensure transcripts are either attached to the application or delivered to FGS depending on the particular requirements of the competition. Ensure you are aware of the deadlines for any external scholarships you are applying for. Transcripts must be complete official copies. Be sure to order transcript very early and have them sent directly to you, not to an UVic office.

Other external funding opportunities

There are many other external funding competitions that you can apply for directly. These do not involve an extra pre-selection step at the university level. As we find out about opportunities we forward the information to departmental graduate secretaries across campus. They'll send out the announcements through their student email distribution lists. Please ensure that you have your preferred email address on your graduate secretary's email list.

Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's

Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master's

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master’s Program (CGSM) is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The CGSM Program supports 2,500 students annually in all disciplines and is administered jointly by Canada’s three federal granting agencies. The selection and post-award administration are carried out at the university level, under the guidance of the three agencies. Eligible universities receive a CGSM allocation indicating the number of students to whom they can award scholarships; these allocations are divided into broad fields of study that mirror the three agency streams. Successful applicants will win one of the following awards depending on the focus of the research proposed:

  • Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships(CGSM) in health research (CIHR)
  • Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships(CGSM) in natural sciences and engineering research (NSERC)
  • Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships(CGSM) in social sciences and humanities research (SSHRC)

Value and Duration: $17,500 for 12 months; successful applicants can start award payment in May, September or in some circumstances January

Timelines and Deadlines:

  • Early September – Application opens in the Federal Council Research Portal
  • December 1 - Application Deadline (same deadline for students and referees)
  • December 2 to Early January – UVic Scholarship team verifying application eligibility and sorts applications into groups by research council and academic department
  • Mid January to Early February – Applications are vetted and ranked by academic departments
  • Mid February to March – Campus wide adjudication to select top candidates
  • April 1 – Competition results available to students in Research Portal

Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral (CIHR CGSD)

CIHR provides doctoral scholarships through their Health Research Training Award Programs to students pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field. CIHR Doctoral awards are valued at $35,000 per year for up to three years. To apply you must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada. 

Students currently registered at UVic, on an approved leave from UVic or who were registered in a degree program at UVic in this calendar year (Jan – Dec 2020) must be nominated by UVic and therefore are required to participate in the UVic internal adjudication process.

How to apply?  Register to create a login account in ResearchNet and follow the CIHR Doctoral Research Award Instructions.  Your application must be submitted through ResearchNet no later than Thursday October 1, 2020.  After October 1 your application will be checked to be sure it is correct and complete and you will be contacted by email to advise you of any required changes if necessary.  Applications are reviewed by your academic unit and then scored by the UVic CIHR Selection Committee.

All applicants will be notified in late November to let you know if your application has been chosen by UVic.

IODE War Memorial Scholarships

The National Chapter of Canada IODE initiated War Memorial Doctoral Scholarships in 1918 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom. Initially, bursaries were granted to children of men and women who lost their lives or who were permanently disabled while fighting for Canada. Since the first scholarships were awarded in 1921, IODE War Memorial Scholars have made important contributions to Canada and the world in medicine, science, business, politics and academia.

Eligibility to Apply

A candidate must
* Be a Canadian Citizen
* Hold a first degree from a Canadian university
* Be enrolled in at least the second year of a doctoral program

Letters of intent must be received by  October 1, 2020, and  the application and all supporting documents must be received by November 1, 2020.

Three scholarships valued at $15,000 will be awarded to students attending Canadian or Commonwealth universities.   A committee in the province of the candidate’s first degree makes selections and forwards nominations to the National Chapter where the final decisions are made.  The National Selection Committee is comprised of five IODE members and three professors from different universities.  The National Chapter of Canada IODE War Memorial Scholars have made important contributions to Canada and the world in medicine, science, business, politics and academia.

Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarships

Who should read this?

You should read this if you are interested in scholarship funding to support graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere. There are two scholarship categories:

  • The Mackenzie King Open Scholarship - open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study in any field, in Canada or elsewhere. One awarded annually, valued at $10,000 but subject to change.
  • The Mackenzie Travelling Scholarship - open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study, in the United States or the United Kingdom, of international relations or industrial relations (including the international or industrial relations aspects of law, history, politics and economics). Four awarded annually, valued at $11,000 but the number and value of scholarships are subject to change. Last year four scholarships of $12,500 each were awarded.

As in past years, information and application forms for the Mackenzie King Scholarships are available on the Mackenzie King Scholarships Website, www.mkingscholarships.ca. Applicants are able to download the application form and information sheet, in English and French, for both the Open and Travelling Scholarships.

Please note that the application form and information sheet are essentially unchanged from last year.

Are you eligible to apply?

  • The awards will be based on high academic achievements (first class standing and equivalent), personal qualities, and demonstrated aptitudes.
  • Consideration will be given to the applicant's proposed program of study.
  • For either the Open or the Travelling Scholarship, applicants must be holders of a Canadian university degree of any level. Applicants who have not yet finished their degree are eligible to apply provided they expect to finish it before the graduate studies to be supported by the scholarship begin. The present competition is for graduate study in the academic year 2021-22, beginning in or after September 2021.
  • Please note that international students are eligible to apply, but they must already hold a Canadian degree.
  • If the graduate study being pursued is their first Canadian degree, they are not eligible.

Applications must be made to the home university, which is the university from which the applicant has received or expects to receive her or his most recent Canadian degree. Any applications submitted directly to the Selection Committee will not be considered.

  • Applicants need to complete all sections of the application, combine documents into a single pdf and email the application to fgsaward@uvic.ca.
  • Reference Letters (3) will have to be emailed to email address noted above. Advise each Reference to use the email subject line: 2021 M’King competition – Applicant’s Name
  • Applications and References must be submitted via email no later than Monday, February 1, 2021.

UVic will conduct a pre-selection adjudication process. Our committee is permitted to forward to the Mackenzie King Scholarship Board of Trustees the two top-ranked applications for each the Open Scholarship and the Travelling Scholarship categories.

 

Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (MSFSS)

The MSFSS program supports active Tri-Council master's and doctoral CGS award holders with travel supplements of up to $6,000. These supplements are available to help offset the costs of undertaking research studies outside of Canada for a defined period. They are awarded by Canada's three federal funding agencies:

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this funding opportunity, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada by the application deadline dates;
  • be registered at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application;
  • have accepted or currently hold one of the following Canada Graduate Scholarships:
    • Joseph-Armand Bombardier (SSHRC);
    • Alexander Graham Bell (NSERC);
    • Frederick Banting and Charles Best (CIHR); or
    • Vanier CGS (if eligible);
  • undertake your proposed trip abroad no earlier than the competition deadline date; and
  • not hold, or have held, any other CGS-MSFSS during the course of your graduate studies.

How to apply

  • There are two MSFSS competitions each year – one in June and one in October.
  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies has an internal deadline for your application (always set earlier than the deadlines noted on the NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR websites) and selects which applications to submit to the granting agencies.
  • If you are an active CGS award holder you will receive an email from the Faculty of Graduate Studies, before each MSFSS competition cycle, to advise you of the application process and internal submission deadline.
  • If you are a qualified applicant, you must complete the necessary documentation and submit it to the Faculty of Graduate Studies for consideration.

What happens to your application at UVic once you submit it?

The university is restricted by how many MSFSS applications we can send forward to the granting agencies. The Faculty of Graduate Studies is informed of the number of supplements available to them in each of the three areas of research disciplines. A committee of associate deans will review the applications and decide which ones will be forwarded to the agencies with a recommendation.

  • June MSFSS competition - you will be advised if your application has been forwarded to the appropriate agency in early June. Official funding decisions are announced in late July.
  • October MSFSS competition - you will be advised if your application has been forwarded to the appropriate agency in early October. Official funding decisions are announced in late November.

Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) – Graduate Fellowships

Who should read this?

  • You should read this if you are interested in fellowship funding to support your master's or doctoral research in an area related to climate change impacts and adaptation.
  • PICS Graduate Fellowships are available on an annual basis to outstanding master's and PhD students. Fellowship holders are expected to conduct research in an area that is both of importance to British Columbia and related to the PICS Strategic Research Plan, which incorporates research questions related to the following themes:
    • The low carbon-emissions economy
    • Sustainable communities
    • Resilient ecosystems
    • Social mobilization
    • Carbon management in BC forests
  • Fellowships are valued at $12,000 per year for master's and $18,000 per year for PhD students.

Are you eligible to apply?

To be considered eligible for support, as of the application deadline date, you must:

  • have a first class average (a grade of "A-") in at least the last 12-24 months of your current or previous studies
  • be conducting or intend to conduct research in an area that is both of importance to British Columbia and related to the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions

Application process

  • PICS posts a call for applications in early February of each year on their website. Our office will also send it out.
  • It is only during this time (between February and late-March) that the fellowship application is available on the PICS website.
  • Application forms and supporting documentation must be submitted electronically in pdf format (as one file if possible) via email to picsra@uvic.ca.
  • There is no internal pre-selection process done through the Faculty of Graduate Studies office.
  • Decisions on funding are announced mid to late May each year.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship

The Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation Scholarship is “a three-year program designed to train Engaged Leaders, equipping outstanding doctoral candidates with the skills to translate their ideas into action, for the betterment of their communities, Canada, and the world.”

To apply to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

1) You must be already accepted into or in year one, two, or three of a full-time doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences 

2) Your doctoral work must relate to at least one of the Foundation’s Four Themes: Human Rights and Dignity, Responsible Citizenship, Canada and the World, People and their Natural Environment

3) Be a Canadian citizen studying at a Canadian or foreign institution, or a non-Canadian (permanent resident or foreign national) enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution

Candidates who are committed to a three-year leadership program and who meet the eligibility criteria can apply directly to the Foundation through the application portal.

You must submit your application to the Foundation by 11:59 pm EST January 5, 2021.

Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship

A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom and provides recipients with direct payment of the Oxford University (and College) fees, two economy class flights - to and from the UK - for the beginning and end of studies in Oxford, plus an annual stipend and a settling in allowance which are paid directly to the recipient.

Given the current situation with the Covid-19 pandemic, aspects of the application requirements and subsequent selection processes may be subject to change. Our website will be updated with any changes once we are made aware of them from Rhodes Trust, and once you have started an application any changes will be communicated via email from The Rhodes Team via the Embark system.

Eligibility to Apply:

A candidate must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada (students who are attending a Canadian university on a student visa are not eligible to apply).
  • be domiciled in Canada
  • Upon 1 October 2021, you must meet either of the below criteria:
    • You must be at least 18 and have not reached your 24th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1997 and on or before 1 October 2003).

OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual

    • You must have not reached your 27th birthday (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1994) AND your first undergraduate degree must have been (or will be) awarded on or after 1 October 2020
  • have completed (or will have completed by June / July 2022) an undergraduate degree from a college or university (normally a Bachelor’s degree) to a sufficiently high standard to be admitted to postgraduate study at the University of Oxford.
  • If unsuccessful in your first application to the Rhodes Scholarships, you may subsequently re-apply only once more (and this must be in the same constituency), subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

All candidates currently attending or just completed their studies at the University of Victoria must participate in the UVic screening process. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will contact the President’s Office and request an endorsement letter for all successful UVic applicants and send the letters to the Secretary of the Regional Selection Committee. Applicants will not be provided with a copy of the endorsement letter directly.

Previous students of the University of Victoria, who have been granted a degree from UVic, may also apply through their province of residence, but must still participate in the UVic screening process.

Basis of Selection

Proven intellectual and academic attainment of a high standard is the first quality required of applicants, but they will also be required to show integrity of character, sympathy for and protection of the weak, the ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the full. The last of these qualities may be evidenced through participation and success in sports, or other ways that demonstrate candidates have the physical vigour to make an effective contribution.

For the University of Victoria internal screening competition the qualities listed above will be demonstrated by:

  • Excellent academic standing of cumulative GPA of 8.0 or higher
  • Achievement of academic merit awards, such as scholarships, awards and prizes
  • Consistent and ongoing participation in community and volunteer activities on campus or in the community at large that demonstrate leadership, community service and integrity of character

The presence of these qualities must be evidenced through the candidate’s application, a thoughtful and well written personal essay, and letters from 6 references.

How to apply:

Applications are to be done online through the website for the Rhodes Trust https://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/scholarships/apply/. Students are to complete the application, PRINT the entire application to PDF, including ALL supporting documents and send the application package to Kay del Sol at fgsschol@uvic.ca no later than 4:30 PM Monday, July 26, 2021. No deadline extensions will be possible.

Applicants will be able to create a Rhodes Application account to complete an application by bypassing the code entry page, but will not be able to submit the application directly to Rhodes.  Finalists in the University of Victoria internal competition will be provided with the code to submit their full application to Rhodes by the application deadline of September 27, 2021.

Important Notes About Selecting Referees:

You must provide a list of six (6) people who are willing to submit references on your behalf. At least three of the referees must be people who taught you in your undergraduate studies (they should clearly indicate so in the letter), and who can comment in detail on your academic ability and how well they think you would fare at Oxford.

Two or more of the referees should act as character references who will testify to your character and/or your involvement in extra-curricular/service or leadership activities. Your referees must not be personal friends, relatives or contemporaries.

Contact your referees very early to request their support. Your referees must be able to submit an initial reference letter for you and if you are nominated, they must be willing to submit a final reference letter via the Rhodes application portal. Share the Guidance for Referees document with your referees to help direct their letters.

Referees must email a PDF of their signed letters to Kay del Sol at fgsschol@uvic.ca by Monday, July 26th, 2021 or the application will be considered incomplete and disqualified.

Please be sure to notify your references that there are potentially two deadlines they must meet; the internal UVic competition deadline of July 26th, and if you are successful in the UVic competition, your referee will need to upload their reference letter to your online application for submission by October 11th.

 

What happens if I am nominated by UVic?

By the beginning of September 2021, successful applicants will be given the authorization code to upload their final application to Rhodes by the deadline. The Rhodes committee will invite their shortlist candidates for an online interview to take place in November, and winners will be announced early in 2022.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

Prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) of $50,000/yr are available to Canadian and international graduate students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement and are pursuing doctoral study at a Canadian university. These scholarships are administered by Canada's three federal funding agencies:

  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
  • Social sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

How to apply

  • The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program does not accept direct applications. You must be nominated by a Canadian university with a Vanier CGS allocation. 
  • Only one Canadian university can nominate you and it must be the university where you intend to pursue doctoral studies.
  • If you want to be nominated by UVic, you should speak with your department's graduate adviser to express interest in the Vanier Scholarship. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will request one nomination from each department in early September of each year. 

How will you know if you are nominated by your department?

If you are nominated for a Vanier CGS, you will be contacted by email by the Faculty of Graduate Studies in September and invited to complete the online Vanier application form. The email will include the UVic deadline and resources available to assist you with the application.

What happens to your application at UVic once you submit it?

The University of Victoria is restricted in how many Vanier nominations we can send forward to the national competition for NSERC, SSHRC and CIHR. The UVic Vanier CGS committee will review the applications and decide which applicants will be forwarded to the national competition.

You will be advised if your application has been forwarded to the national competition in early November. Results of the national competition are announced the following April.
