Scholarships for students with a disability
Students with a disability, including those who are on a reduced course load, may be eligible for scholarships as long as they meet academic and/or other award-specific criteria.
Students registered with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) must send a copy of their CAL letter (confirming CAL registration) to Student Awards and Financial Aid, awards4@uvic.ca, to be considered for a reduced course load.
Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Mattinson Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities competition is now CLOSED.
Only one UVic student will be nominated to be put forward in the competition.
UVic deadline to apply was 4:00 PM Friday, April 22, 2022.
Objective: To encourage Canadian students with permanent disabilities to pursue university studies with the ultimate objective of obtaining a first undergraduate degree.
Mattinson Scholarship Program for Student with Disabilities winners will be selected by Universities Canada (formerly AUCC) and will be notified in August 2022. Applicants not selected will not be notified.
Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.
To be eligible to receive funding, you must:
- Have received care as defined here in the Province of British Columbia through the Child, Family and Community Service Act for a minimum of 12 months (consecutive or accumulated) in any, or a combination of, the categories as outlined in the consent form.
- Have received any of the care statuses outlined in the consent form at the time they turn 19 regardless of their time in care.
- Be admitted to the University of Victoria for the upcoming term of study and are
registered in their first undergraduate degree program.
- Be registered in and maintain enrolment in full-time studies, 60% of a full-time course load per term (4.5 units per term, 3.0 units per term for students with a permanent disability)
- Have a sessional grade point average of at least 2.0 in the previous two terms
- Demonstrate financial need.

- If you are approved and registered for courses, you will be emailed at the beginning of each term with a reminder to submit an electronic budget form.
- If you are on the Provincial Tuition Waiver, funding awarded through the UVic Tuition Award will be issued as either direct deposit or a cheque to be mailed to your preferred address on file.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work.

One or more awards of at least $1,000 each are given to entering, transferring or continuing undergraduate students with a visual impairment and demonstrated financial need, with a preference for a mature student.

One or more scholarships will be awarded to academically outstanding students with a physical disability with permanent mobility impairments.

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student with a physical disability or a learning disability in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Education on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.
Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

One or more scholarships of a minimum of $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding students with a physical disability or learning disability. Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Engineering.

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding entering or continuing undergraduate students with a physical disability who graduated from a Canadian secondary school or attended a university or college in BC prior to attending UVic.

One or more scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding entering, continuing or transferring undergraduate students with a physical disability in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, the Faculty of Science or the School of Nursing. Preference will be given to students who are entering UVic from a Vancouver Island high school.

An award is given to a continuing undergraduate student with a physical disability (or disabilities) for the enhancement of the student learning experience through travel, in support of research/creative activity and may include, but not be limited to, field schools, exhibitions, conferences or presentations. The student's disability (or disabilities) must be of a severity and degree to require a personal care worker to accompany the student when travelling. Preference is for students with a GPA of 6.0 or higher.
Students must submit:
- an essay of not less than 500 words and not more than 1000 words, outlining the educational benefits of travel, how travel will relate to the student's studies, and what the student intends to learn from their travel;
- a letter of reference from a University of Victoria professor, demonstrating that the travel is related and beneficial to the student's studies;
- a letter from a medical professional confirming that a personal care worker is needed to accompany the student when travelling; and
- a proposed budget for travel, including, but not limited to, estimated costs for travel, food, accommodation and accompaniment by a personal care worker. The student must provide ten percent (10%) of the approved budget.
Students enrolled for Summer Session (May to August) must apply via the online application in January; students enrolled for the Winter Session (September to April) must apply via the online application in April.
