Rates of pay
The University of Victoria Human Resources department and CUPE 951 meet annually to review and determine the employee group for each job posting. Work Study jobs have been classified as either Non-Union or CUPE 951. Each work study job posting indicates the appropriate employee group. When completing a work study timesheet, please choose the correct employee group for the position. If you are not sure, please contact your supervisor.
Work Study rates of pay are as follows:
The 2023/2024 Work Study Program pays $17.50 per hour, including 4% vacation pay.
Work Study students filling positions deemed CUPE will be charged a one-time $10.00 initiation fee and 50 cents per pay cheque for other union fees. An additional 1.79% will also be deducted on total earnings for membership dues. The Work Study Program will pay the 1.79% cost on total earnings for membership dues. This information and a breakdown is outlined on the work study time sheet.
Should the Work Study position require graduate level experience, departments are bound by the negotiated specialist/instructional rates of pay for students and must agree to top-up the Work Study rate of pay accordingly.

Due to the nature of payroll processing, this schedule must be strictly followed. Late submission of timesheets will result in the delay of payment until the next pay period.
There is no work study during the summer term (May - August).
Work Study Students and BC Employment Standards Act Paid Sick Days
It is the hiring Department and Supervisor’s responsibility to educate themselves about paid sick leave legislation in the BC Employment Standards Act. Questions should be directed to the UVIC HR consultant for their department. Any sick days indicated on work study time sheets will reduce the amount of hours available in the position. There is no additional funding available to cover stat holidays or sick days.
The 2023/2024 work study program operates from September 6, 2023 to April 26, 2024 only. Final payroll requisitions must be received by Payroll before 4:30 pm on the payroll deadline immediately following April 26, 2024.
