Work study information for supervisors

Work study, funded by the university, is designed to provide on-campus work experience for students requiring financial assistance.

UVic students who demonstrate financial need and meet the registration requirements will be eligible to participate in the work study program.

The work study program is available September to April each year. There is no work study during the summer term (May - August).

COVID-19 Health and Safety - In a continued and evolving response to COVID-19, the university will be introducing new plans, protocols and resources to protect the health and safety of all members of the university community. Each unit on campus will have their own plan to follow safety protocols. Supervisors who wish to hire a work study student will need to confirm with their unit/department head that their proposed job opportunity meets the safety protocols for their area. Supervisors should be prepared to adapt the job opportunities as new protocols unfold.

Pursuant to Article 34 of the CUPE 951 collective agreement, Union and Human Resources representatives reviewed proposals submitted to SAFA and made a determination based on the description of the duties and qualifications that the work either fell or did not fall within the jurisdiction of CUPE 951. If you have any questions about how your work study position was classified please call or email avphrassist@uvic.ca

Note: Please ensure you complete the correct timesheet for work study positions designated as CUPE.

Work Study Students and BC Employment Standards Act Paid Sick Days

It is the hiring Department and Supervisor’s responsibility to educate themselves about paid sick leave legislation in the BC Employment Standards Act.  Questions should be directed to the UVIC HR consultant for their department. Any sick days indicated on work study time sheets will reduce the amount of hours available in the position. There is no additional funding available to cover stat holidays or sick days.
