Faculty of Social Sciences
The Faculty of Social Sciences focuses on the dynamics of social interaction in contexts ranging across culture, markets, politics, and society, exploring how we live together and in relation to the world around us. The Faculty offers a wide range of international and local field schools in anthropology, environmental studies and geography. Our students travel to Angers, France to explore terroir-driven food systems; cities in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany to study sustainability issues; Mexico to explore ethnographic methods; and Belize to examine the production of cocoa and the global food supply chain.

Scholars Program
This program develops the research and leadership skills that exceptional undergraduate students need to become emerging researchers and leaders in the social sciences and UVic undergraduate community.

Transformative Climate Action Program
The program emphasizes reducing emissions, supporting decolonization, boosting social resilience, and overcoming polarization. Courses use hands-on, applied learning to build skills needed to reduce climate impacts.

School of Environmental Studies Field Schools
Students take their learning outside of the classroom with one of our multiple Environmental Studies experiential field courses abroad.

Terroir Field School
Students travel to Angers France to explore the intricacies of terroir-driven food systems. They visit farms, businesses, and experts in regional and sustainable food production.

Mexico Ethnographic Field School
While exploring ethnographic methods, participants discover some of the unique cultural practices dynamics that characterize contemporary Maya culture in the Yucatán Peninsula.
