Learning and leadership

At UVic, learning is for everyone. We offer a range of employee learning and leadership development opportunities that help employees thrive, build community, and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive workplace. We provide a variety of ways for employees to engage in learning, including workshops, online self-paced courses, podcasts, communities of practice, cohort-based programming, honouring different learning preferences and needs.
 
Through our Employee Learning and Leadership programs, we:

  • support all UVic employees on their lifelong learning journey, providing skills and knowledge to reach personal and professional goals
  • foster community and connection, emphasizing relational, inclusive, and values-based approaches 
  • cultivate adaptability and creativity, preparing employees and leaders to thrive in a dynamic higher-education environment

Employee learning program

The Employee Learning Program (ELP) is available to all regular employees and offers a multitude of opportunities to build skills, strengthen relationships, and grow professionally. 

The core courses in the ELP are organized into learning suites. These are bundles of courses that surround a central theme or skill set.

  • Clear Communication: sharpen interpersonal communication skills for the workplace

Leadership development

At UVic, we are committed to fostering the growth of leaders at every stage of their leadership journey. Whether you are an emerging leader, an experienced leader, or an everyday leader, UVic provides robust opportunities for continuous development.

The Leadership Development Program is organized into learning series, which progressively develop leadership skills, knowledge, and capacity. Each learning series consists of a sequence of courses that are meant to build upon each other. Completion of a learning series often takes 1-2 years. Series completion certificates can demonstrate that you have learned certain skills and may be ready for new opportunities.

The UVic Leader Program is a bold new, values-based development opportunity designed to support UVic leaders and strengthen our leadership community, as we navigate today’s complex and evolving higher education landscape. This program rethinks how we do leadership at UVic by centering a community-oriented leadership culture.

Grounded in research and aligned with UVic’s aspirational culture, this unique program builds the mindsets, skills, and capacities needed to lead through complexity and co-create the university we’re becoming.

Learning Central

Learning Central is...

UVic's staff learning registration system. Learning central has many features that help employees take control of their learning and development.

These include:

  • easily register and un-register for courses
  • save courses you find interesting for future reference
  • subscribe to notifications for future course offerings
  • view and download learning records including completion certificates
  • upload training certificates you have been granted by other organizations
  • supervisors can view training records for their direct reports
Training Providers in Learning Central

Learning Central Training Providers can...

  • create, edit, and remove courses and instructors
  • manage registration and waitlists for their course offerings
  • collect accessibility and dietary accommodation needs for participants
  • communicate easily with registrants

UVic's Learning Management System (LMS), and your platform to register for, and complete, online learning.

In Brightspace you can:

  • browse and register for online courses
  • revisit courses anytime. 
    • once registered, you can return to your course anytime via your Brightspace account (accessible through Online Tools).
