In this program, you’ll pursue mathematics research in the broad areas of applied, discrete, or pure math, combined with social science or education topics. Your education will be supplemented by coursework and regular seminars.

The outcome of your studies will be either a thesis that will advance the field of mathematics, or a non-thesis-based project that illustrates the use of mathematics in social science or education. You’ll defend this work in an oral examination that will prove your mastery of your topic.

Outcomes

Graduates with an MA in Mathematics will be able to:

  • apply to enrol for doctoral studies in mathematics
  • meet the universal need for graduates with analytical and problem-solving skills
  • apply problem-solving skills in a variety of settings, particularly social sciences and education
  • teach math in secondary schools and some post-secondary colleges
  • apply mathematical knowledge to research in social sciences

  • you must list a potential supervisor on your application
  • this faculty member must agree to be your supervisor and recommend your admission

To find a supervisor, review the faculty contacts. When you've found a faculty member whose research complements your own, contact them by email.

All graduate students have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. You do not need to find your own supervisor, but will be allocated one when you are accepted into the program.

It may improve your chances of being accepted to contact potential supervisors in advance to introduce yourself, explain your interests and determine whether they will be accepting new students in the near future.
