Program Declaration

Student soldering circuit board

Program declaration is the process by which Engineering students formally indicate the degree program they wish to pursue within the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

Allocation into Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSEng) programs takes into account academic performance, ranked program preferences, and the number of spaces available in each program. We actively work to make as much space as possible in programs with high demand.

Who Needs to Declare?

You must complete a program declaration if you are a:

  • Current first-year Engineering student, or

  • Engineering Undeclared student

All eligible students must declare or re-declare the Engineering program area they wish to pursue through the declaration portal.

Program Options:

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to declare a BEng or BSEng program, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Achievement of second-year standing (12.0 units or more)

  • A minimum C+ average

  • No grades below C in required courses

  • Competitive GPA, where required by program. We aim to place every student in their first-choice program and take steps each year to create as much capacity as possible. In cases where demand exceeds available seats, placement is based on competitive GPA.

How GPA Is Calculated

  • All required courses, including those beyond first year, are used to assess program declaration eligibility and GPA

  • Complementary Studies electives and Natural Science electives are excluded from GPA calculations

  • If you have repeated a course, only the most recent academic attempt of the course or its approved substitute will be used when assessing eligibility and calculating your GPA. Previous attempts will be disregarded but will remain on your record in order for the University to produce other GPA. calculations, i.e. term, sessional, cumulative.

Programs that receive more applications than available spaces may require GPAs higher than the minimum average.

Ranking Your Program Preferences

As part of the declaration process, you will be asked to rank Engineering degree programs in order of preference using the online declaration portal.

  • Rankings are not final when first submitted

  • You may revise your preferences at any time before the deadline

  • To update your rankings, return to this page and resubmit the form

Your rankings, combined with your academic performance and program capacity, will be used to determine program placement.

Key Dates and Timeline

Program Information Session

February 24th, 2026

  • Program information presentations will take place during ENGR 120/121 sessions at the end of February before the declaration portal opens. This is your best chance to hear from all departments about their programs at once.

Departmental Information Sessions

  • Departments run their own information sessions usually in the evenings, throughout January and February. The dates will be posted on BrightSpace, via the TVs in the ECS buildings, on the board in front of the undergraduate advising office in the Engineering Office Wing, and on faculty social media accounts.

Declaration Deadlines and Decisions

  • Declaration portal opens: March 2, 2026
  • Final deadline to submit rankings: April 30, 2026

  • Program declaration results announced: By May 31, 2026

  • Program declaration effective: September 2026

Important Notes

  • The portal is not first-come, first-served. Submitting your preferences earlier does not affect allocation
  • Results will not be released before Summer session classes begin

  • Students will not be eligible to register in restricted, discipline-specific courses during the Summer session

  • If you are completing courses during the Summer session, those courses must also meet program declaration requirements

  • Additional details will be provided in the email confirming your declaration outcome

Declaration Portal

The link to the declaration portal will appear here on March 2, 2026. It will also be available via the BrightSpace page.
