Sophia Perun (psychology)
From securing funding to create innovative assistive devices, to revitalizing a school-based brain injury prevention program, psychology co-op student Sophia Perun quickly knocked her co-op work term out of the park.
As a client support worker and digital media associate with the Powell River Brain Injury Society, Sophia made a tremendous impact. Her role was diverse—she worked directly with clients, led weekly art and writing workshops, managed the society’s website and social media, created curriculum for elementary school children, took part in community outreach, and more.
A UVic Changemaker Award recipient
Sophia is one of the recipients of the 2026 UVic Changemaker Awards, which celebrate co-op students who have made significant contributions to their workplace, community and/or to their own personal learning.
Sophia was awarded the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion award, which recognizes students who have actively contributed towards Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives during their work term.
Securing funding for assistive technology
“Sophia made an immediate, lasting impact on our team and the clients we serve,” says Executive Director Tricia Collingham.
“She successfully secured the Makers Making Change grant that allowed her to design and create assistive devices that support the independence and well-being of our clients—an achievement that speaks to both her resourcefulness and her deep commitment to accessibility.”
Revitalizing curriculum on brain injury prevention
Sophia also revitalized the society’s school-based brain injury prevention program, developing fresh, engaging, and age-appropriate educational materials that strengthened the team’s community outreach and improved understanding of brain health among students. This included presenting to 360 elementary school students at 12 presentations.
“I was given the opportunity to lead projects and various workshops during my time at the society,” says Sophia. “The grant that I applied for led to the creation and distribution of 70 accessibility devices tailored to clients’ unique needs.”
This focus on individual, customized support was especially rewarding for Sophia. “A major part of my job and time was dedicated to supporting clients and their diverse needs and abilities. I was able to see how impactful it is to create a safe space for people who need a community and resources after an injury.”
Garden and design work
Another standout contribution was the creation of a garden art initiative, where Sophia designed painted neuron installations to hang along the society’s garden fence. “These neuron-flower hybrids, with their vivid colours and root-like pathways, have transformed the space into a meaningful and inspiring symbol of recovery and connection,” says Tricia.
Sophia also put her design skills into practice when she created a series of helmet safety and brain injury prevention posters, using her own artwork to produce visuals that are both educational and eye-catching.
An impactful experience
“My experience with the Powell River Brain Injury Society was incredibly impactful to me,” says Sophia.
“I've left an educational program, community art project, social media presence and accessibility devices to continue after me at the society. I am proud of everything that I accomplished during my 8 months on the Sunshine Coast and grateful for the incredible people and support I received, allowing me to contribute in a way that most aligned with my values and interests.
