Consultation topics

The Technology Solutions Centre (TSC) team can consult on anything to do with technology procurement or refer you to another specialized team that can help.

Some of our more common consultation topics are outlined below, but feel free to get in touch if you have different questions. We can help:

  • find existing solutions
    • products that UVic has already purchased
    • products that other departments are using and has already had PIAs conducted, which can make procurement much faster
  • recommend computers specs
    • standard computers from the Microserve eStore that will suit your purposes
    • if there's no suitable standard computer, an alternative that meets UVic's requirements
  • get quotes and estimate costs
    • procure quotes from preferred suppliers
    • estimate the costs of a purchase, new contract or software deployment
    • identify hidden costs and risks
  • estimate timelines and risk
    • estimate how long a procurement process will take
    • what risks might be involved.
  • assess the need for formal reviews
    • security and vulnerability assessment
    • privacy impact assessment (PIA)
    • request for deviation from standards

Prepare for your consultation

Some information that will help us move forward with consultations for hardware purchases:

  • What are your business requirements?
  • Will it be running specialized software (like an instrument controller) with strict technical requirements?

For software purchases:

  • What are your business requirements?
  • Is the software for a single person or team to use or for large groups of people like students and employees?
  • Is this purchase for a new initiative a significant change to an existing one?
  • Will personal information be stored on the system?
  • What is your budget? What's the source of the funding?

If you don't have answers yet, don't worry! An initial consultation may be just the first step in the support for your purchase.
