About
Hello, my name is Sylas (They/He).
I am Certified Practice Registered Nurse. I began my nursing career in 2015 and have had the opportunity to gain diverse experience in many fields, including acute care, mental health and substance use, and community and public health in both settler-run and Indigenous-run care settings. I am constantly working to decolonize the care that I provide. I strive to continue to learn and open my eyes to the truth of the present and historical impacts of colonization, and to take a meaningful role in the work of decolonizing healthcare.
I am passionate about learning and am always excited to learn new things about science and medicine. My approach to care is centred on providing more accessible care to queer and trans clients, neurodiverse clients, and to anyone who experiences barriers when accessing healthcare.
From more than 10 years as an RN and as a human with health needs, I understand how crucial, yet complicated, navigating the healthcare system can be, and I am committed to making care spaces safer and more supportive for the student population here at UVic.
My areas of professional passion are in gender-affirming care, sexual health, and mental health for neurodiverse folks. I strive to destigmatize sexual health and to support individuals to be empowered about their sexuality including accessing sexual health services.
It is an honour to work on the traditional territories of the Songhees, W̱SÁNEĆ and Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) nations, where the university is located.
When I’m not at the clinic, I enjoy many hobbies both quiet and active. Some of my favourite activities including rock climbing, dance, mountain biking, resting and re charging with my cat, and adventuring with my service dog, Lex. We seek out gender euphoria and queer joy whenever possible.
