Meet Mehreen M.
About
I am Mehreen (she/her). I am in the final year of my Master’s in Counselling Psychology at UVic, and I look forward to supporting my fellow students as a practicum counsellor at the Student Wellness Centre.
I am an immigrant from Punjab, India, and since coming to Canada, I have called the traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples (otherwise known as Surrey) my home. Last year, I moved to Victoria to pursue my M.A., and I am grateful to live and learn on the traditional territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples.
Outside of my academics, fun for me is having a relaxing day with nothing on my to-do list and waking up without an alarm!
Counselling approach
My approach to counselling is collaborative, culturally sensitive, and strengths-based. I aim to create a warm, non-judgmental space where you feel seen, heard, and supported in your journey. I deeply value your lived experiences and view you as the expert in your own life. Together, we will work toward goals and changes that feel authentic and meaningful to you.
As a student myself, I am passionate about supporting my fellow students as they navigate both expected and unexpected transitions and challenges. Across my helping roles, I have provided mental health support to students, incarcerated individuals, and immigrants and refugees. Most recently, I completed a practicum at the Vancouver Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees (VICCIR), where I supported adults with concerns such as self-esteem issues, perfectionism, procrastination, and life transitions, primarily using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I also facilitated groups with high school students focused on building practical tools for coping and well-being.
I draw from a variety of counselling approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), evolutionary psychology, and mindfulness-based practices. I strive to work collaboratively with you in ways that honour your experiences, strengths, and goals.
