What counts in wildlife and politics

Wildlife population sizes, trends and associated policies reported by some governments—including BC's former provincial government—lack supporting evidence. “We coined the term, ‘political populations,’ because such exaggerations likely serve political interests," says lead author Chris Darimont, a UVic conservation scientist and science director at Raincoast Conservation Foundation.

Be the change

The world is interconnected and we think learning should be too. Through one of our seven different social sciences disciplines, examine all aspects of our society and the world we live in.

  • If you're curious about the world around you, there's a research project you can create.
  • If you're passionate about an issue, we'll help you make an impact.
  • If you like contributing to communities, there are opportunities to work with local people here or in the most remote corners of the world.

At UVic's Faculty of Social Sciences, you'll get a dynamic, hands-on education that takes advantage of our extraordinary academic environment and makes a difference in the lives of our students and the world.
