Yuzhi Joel Ong

Canada Research Chair in Emergent Digital Art Practice – Tier 2

Research summary

In recent years, ecological collapse has presented an existential threat for communities across the world. As Canada Research Chair in Emergent Digital Art Practice, Dr. Yuzhi Joel Ong is exploring the potential of digital art, emerging technology, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-based making to transform scientific, ecological knowledge into meaningful experiences in multispecies environments. This research-creation program will take place in Dr Ong’s Lab for Open Media in Computational Creativity and Environmental Poetics (OM Lab) at the University of Victoria (UVic). The work will be divided into two axes: 1. Artscience Worldbuilding, which will develop the visualization and storytelling modes of environment data and immersive audio-visual environments and; 2. The Symbiotic Makerspace, which will support rapid-prototyping and emerging craft practices across digital and traditional forms. Potential outputs will include digital and interactive displays for galleries, museums and other educational institutions. By blending creativity from the arts and sciences and engaging diverse communities, Ong’s work will inspire innovative approaches to sustainability and expand opportunities for underrepresented voices to shape our collective future.
