Statement on Orlando

All of us at the School of Social Work at UVIC want to extend our condolences to the families, friends, and lovers of those who died or were injured in the Orlando shooting. We stand against hatred and violence in solidarity with LGBTQ communities, particularly LGBTQQ2 communities of colour, and all those who are marginalized, vilified and targeted.

Jeannine Carriere awarded Provost's Advocacy and Activism Award

Dr. Jeannine Carriere, professor with the School of Social Work, received the Provost's Advocacy and Activism Award at the 2017 Diversity Research Forum. "This is very meaningful to me. To be recognized for advocacy and activism is an honour. It was also wonderful to witness the young people receive awards for their written and spoken words. They inspire me with hope for the future of our helping professions."

Note of Solidarity to our Muslim Communities

Most of you have heard this past week about these acts of violence towards our community partners and friends in the Muslim community. We call upon you to stand in solidarity to confront these acts of violence and terror to our friends. It is during these times that our 'actions' must take on its meaning, in that we 'do something' that will show our respect and support to the Muslim community.

Registration with the BC College of Social Workers

The BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW) is the regulatory body for the practice of social work in British Columbia. Their mandate is to protect the public interest by establishing and supporting high standards for qualified Registered Social Workers. At this time in BC, not all social work positions require registration with BCCSW. However, many agencies are changing their policies and beginning to make this a requirement for employment. Applications for registration should be submitted to the College well in advance of graduation to allow time for processing. Students can review the BCCSW site at the link below for information regarding registration.
