Undergraduate students

Island Medical Program

In addition to the neuroscience graduate program, one of the School of Medical Science’s educational roles is to support the Island Medical Program (IMP).

The IMP allows you to complete the University of British Columbia (UBC) MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) while studying in Victoria. This partnership between UBC, Island Health and the University of Victoria is part of a long-term strategy to address shortages of physicians in British Columbia.

As part of the program, you’ll complete first- and second-year coursework at UVic before training at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General Hospitals in your third and fourth year. All MDUP students receive a UBC MD degree upon completion.

Medical science courses

If you are enrolled in a degree program within the Faculties of Science or Social Sciences, you may have the option of completing electives offered by the School of Medical Sciences.

For the purposes of fulfilling a degree requirement, all MEDS courses qualify as a science course. These include:

  • MEDS301: Introduction to Pharmacology
  • MEDS410: Functional Health Neuroanatomy
  • MEDS433: Animals and Human Health
  • MEDS470: Fundamentals of Cognitive Neuroscience
  • MEDS487: Special Topics in Medical Sciences
  • MEDS490: Directed Studies in Medical Sciences

Course descriptions are available in the UVic Academic Calendar. Please note that course availability varies; refer to the course timetable when planning registration.
