Donors
Donations to the University of Victoria can take many forms, from one-time gifts or donations in kind, to planned gifts through one's will.
How your gift helps
Donations support our students and faculty in their mission to produce internationally recognized advances in neuroscience knowledge. Funding can take many forms, such as:
Graduate scholarships & fellowships
Scholarships and fellowships are awarded to outstanding students so they can concentrate on their specialty. Graduate students play an active role in the life of the university as researchers and teaching assistants.
Travel grants
Travel grants allow students to attend research training workshops and present at conferences across Canada and internationally. Opportunities to share research, network and collaborate with scientists from other universities is critical in advancing the quest to solve pressing neurological health issues.
Research funding
Research funding aids in the recruitment and retention of the best faculty. This funding can take several forms:
- endowed chairs and professorships
- matching funds for provincial and federal partnership programs such as National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR).
Neuroscience Graduate Student Association
The Neuroscience Graduate Student Association (NGSA) relies on donations to fund their student-led initiatives each year. In addition to social events, the NGSA hosts various equity and diversity workshops and educational lectures.
How you can contribute
Trainee support
Attracting and retaining high quality trainees is crucial to our research, but there is currently very little funding available for international trainees. Your donation ($1,000+) can support trainee researcher stipends at any of the following levels:
- postdoctoral fellow: $50,000/year
- graduate student: $24,000/year
- undergraduate summer research student: $1,000–$8,000/year
Operational support for existing & new projects
On average, a research project in biomedical science requires a minimum $50,000 per year in operational costs (excluding trainee and staff salaries). Your donation ($5,000+) can contribute to the successful completion of ongoing projects or help spark brand new ideas and collaborations.
Infrastructure support
We use state-of-the-art technology costing $5,000–$500,000, including an array of highly specialized microscopes. Your donation ($5,000+) can contribute to the acquisition of new equipment.
