Signage & maps
We're responsible for signs, maps and wayfinding services on campus. We have strategies and standards to help make sure that UVic's signage is consistent, accessible, durable, safe and easy to read.
Permanent signs
Permanent signage at UVic includes:
- indoor and outdoor wayfinding signs
- room and area ID signs and plates
- donor signs and plaques
- health and safety signs and notices
- building directories
Signs related to health and safety are centrally funded. Other new signs and modifications are funded by departments or project budgets.
Request new or updated signs
Common new sign requests include:
- update the titles and names on office door plates
- change the name or location of a department in a building directory
- change the style of an meeting room ID plate (to add a status slider or page holder)
To request new or modified signage, create a new request using FMIS. In the form, choose:
- Location: the building, floor and room or space where the sign is located
- Type: Install or Uninstall
- Sub type: Signage - (choose Interior, Exterior, or Other)
Report a broken or missing sign
If you don't have access to FMIS, you can report missing, damaged or defaced or signs on the web.

We rent portable sandwich sign boards and H frame stakes for yard signs to help promote UVic events.
In addition to delivering signs, we can help you place them where they'll be most visible without blocking emergency exits.
We charge back for a minimum of 2 hours of labour to deliver and install the signs and retrieve them afterwards. There may be additional costs for more complex requests—for example, designing and printing inserts for the signs. If signs are lost, stolen or damaged beyond regular wear and tear, we may charge the repair or replacement cost.
Request signage for an event
To request temporary sign holders, create a new request using FMIS. In the form, choose:
- Location: the indoor or outdoor space where you want the signs delivered
- Type: Special Events
- Sub type: Signage
Maps
We maintain digital maps and floor plans of the UVic campus. We use this data to create:
- static maps for websites and publications, such as:
- campus map
- jogging routes
- accessibility
- parking guide
- maps for events and conferences
- building and floor plans for departments
- plans and diagrams for projects and reports
We work with the Department of Geography to maintain the interactive UVic campus map. Other interactive and complex mapping projects are out of the scope of this service.
Request a custom map
To request non-standard signage, create a new request using FMIS. In the form, choose:
- Location: the building, floor and room or space that you want mapped (or the closest space you can identify)
- Type: Interior Modification Services
- Sub type: Artwork / Graphics
Digital signage
UVic's digital signage program is operated by University Communications and Marketing. Visit the program website:

Policies
BP3140: University signage
- The Campus Signage Committee has delegates from Campus Planning, Capital Development and Delivery, and the Vice-President of External Relations. The committee is responsible for decisions about wayfinding and interior and exterior signage.
- All signage must be approved by the committee and supplied and installed by Facilities Management. Unauthorized signs, sandwich boards and banners will be removed at the expense of whoever is responsible for it.
- With a few exceptions, posters, notices and handbills can only be posted on approved notice boards. They cannot be posted on building walls or windows. Fire spreads quickly along walls that are lined with paper notices and posters. Even flame-resistant notice boards can be hazardous when they're overloaded with paper.
