French Teacher Education
UVic's teacher education programs are dedicated to supporting teacher candidates find pathways forward to teach in French Immersion and-or Francophone programs. There are several opportunities for teacher candidates to get involved in French language education.
French cohort
Students can apply to be part of the Bachelor of Education Elementary Curriculum PDP program French cohort. Designed for students who are interested in teaching in French Immersion and/or Francophone programs, students in this cohort can expect to:
- Take 55% of their program courses in French (the rest will be taken with the English language cohort)
- Participate in Mon passeport franco
- Undertake weekly first-term field experiences in a French immersion classroom setting
- Complete two practicum experiences in a French immersion or Francophone setting
- Be eligible for government bursaries for studying in French
Step 1: Meet program requirements
Prospective students must meet the program requirements for the Bachelor of Education Elementary Curriculum PDP program.
Step 2: Meet additional language requirements
Prospective students for the Elementary Curriculum PDP French cohort will need to have the DELF B2 or permission of the department. For more information, please review the language proficiency requirements.
Step 3: Indicate interest on your application
When submitting your program application, please select the option that says: “If admitted to this program, would you be interested in being part of a French module and completing some of your coursework in French?"
French modules
Within our Bachelor of Education Elementary Curriculum program and our Bachelor of Education Secondary Curriculum PDP program, students who are interested in teaching in French Immersion and/or Francophone programs can supplement their teacher education studies with a French course module. Students in this module can expect to:
- take a selection of courses in French that will focus on teaching all subjects in French in a minority language context. Students will take the remainder of their program courses in English.
- participate in Mon passeport franco
- undertake weekly first-term field experiences in a French immersion classroom setting
- have practicum experiences in a French immersion or Francophone setting

French Immersion
Students in the Bachelor of Education - Elementary Curriculum program, Bachelor of Education - Elementary Post-Degree Professional Program, and Bachelor of Education - Secondary Post-Degree Professional Program can pursue French Immersion coursework and practicum.

Mon passeport franco
Mon passeport franco is a French language and culture program for all Education students who are interested in a future teaching career in French language education.
The program aims to support you in the continued development of your French language skills, build intercultural competency through cultural and language experiences in French, and develop your positive professional identity as a French teacher.
Highlights of the passeport include:
- language coaching,
- café-conversations,
- séances-Franco,
- SD 61 volunteer experience program,
- DELF B2 preparation workshops.

Demonstrating language proficiency
To complete a French language practicum during a UVic teacher education program, students must demonstrate their French Language proficiency by satisfying one of the following requirements:

- An official post-secondary transcript from studies at an institution (one-year minimum) where French is the main language of instruction (e.g., Université de Montréal), or
- Completion of the DELF B2 certificate
The Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française (DELF) is a French language assessment that determines language proficiency in reading comprehension, oral comprehension, oral production and written production. The level B2 refers to the CEFR language levels and describes an independent language user.
