You’ll also be able to access Gordon Head Campus online electives, tailored to your interests.

Why start at West Shore?

The Computing Gateway program at UVic’s West Shore campus gives you a stronger start in computer science, software engineering and data science. Unlike the Gordon Head campus, where first-year students take a broader mix of courses, West Shore students dive straight into computing. In both first and second year, about 94% of your classes focus on programming and related skills.

You’ll arrive at Gordon Head in third year with a deeper and broader foundation than students who began there. You’ll be better prepared for advanced courses and equipped with versatile skills that employers value.

Another key benefit is flexibility. At West Shore, you don’t have to declare your major until the end of your second year. You’ll spend 2 years exploring computer science, software engineering and data science before deciding which path is right for you.

With smaller class sizes, a close-knit learning community and the freedom to explore before choosing your discipline, West Shore sets you up for success—while keeping you on track to graduate with your peers at Gordon Head.
