Residence Internet

We provide Internet service to students living in UVic’s residence buildings and cluster housing. Access is included in residence fees.

Wi-Fi networks

You can connect to the secure campus network, UVic, from any res or cluster housing building. A second network, UVic-BYOD, supports home entertainment and other electronic devices that don't work with UVic Wi-Fi.

UVic Wi-Fi

Most computers, phones and tablets support UVic's secure Wi-Fi network. You can sign in with your NetLink ID and passphrase.

UVic-BYOD

The UVic-BYOD wireless network is there for home entertainment systems and other electronics that don't support the UVic Wi-Fi network. Use the self-serve web portal to register your devices.

Data ports

Every room in residence and cluster housing has an Ethernet data port. We connect them to the Internet by request.

To use the data port in your room, you’ll need to contact us. You’ll need to include the room and port number in your request. You can find the port number labelled on the metal wallplate in your room. Once it’s active, you can use a network cable to connect your computer.

If your data port is damaged or if you can’t find the room or port number, contact Residence Service for help.

Family housing

Internet service isn't included in family housing. You can subscribe for $25 per month.

Terms of use

All the terms of UVic's Acceptable Use of Information Systems policy apply to the use of Internet in residence except that personal use isn't restricted. Other UVic policies (including the policy on non-academic misconduct) and federal, provincial, and local laws apply.

We may disconnect devices that are exposing security vulnerabilities, degrading network performance for other residents, or otherwise in violation of policies or laws. Other possibly responses are outlined in those policies.

Prohibited devices

Devices that create or broadcast a wireless network of their own are prohibited. This includes network routers, switches and extenders. It also includes many wireless printers and other accessories which create local peer-to-peer networks to connect to a computer, phone or tablet.

These devices cause substantial interference with UVic's wireless access points, making wireless connections slower and less stable for everyone in the area.
