BSc (UNS), MSc (BU), PhD (UBC)

Area of expertise

Biological oceanography, biogeochemical cycles, phytoplankton physiology and ecology, variations in marine primary productivity and export production, phytoplankton utilization of nitrogen, silicon and carbon, silicon isotopic fractionation by diatoms

I am a Professor in the Department of Biology and the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria.

Research focus

The aim of our research is to link physiological studies on phytoplankton to larger marine phenomena. The long-term goal of our program is to better understand the effects of unicellular algae on the Earth’s biogeochemical cycles, marine ecosystem structure and global climate change over geological times.
