Support for students with disabilities

At the UVic Libraries, we aim to create an environment that supports everyone’s learning and access needs. We know that universities can be especially difficult for students with disabilities. The library is here to help you find the resources you need and support your learning.

This help is here for anyone who needs it. You don’t need to disclose your disability or provide documentation.

We're here to help

Do you need one-on-one help? Have any questions? There are a few ways to get in touch—choose whichever is easiest for you.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Website

We have recently redesigned the library website! We consulted students with disabilities to make the website more accessible.

Our website connects you to many different websites and resources that we don't own or control (for example, when you search for articles or use our databases). Unfortunately, not all of these sites and resources are accessible right now.

If there is an accessibility problem with a site we don't own or control, we can report the issue to the website owner. We can work with them to try to make improvements.

We are committed to continually making our web presence more accessible. Please contact the web team at web_ux@uvic.ca if you run into any access barriers when using library resources online. We will work with you to try to find a solution.

Library materials

You can ask us to provide library materials in alternative formats. This includes course reserves. If you are registered with CAL, you can use their alternative text formats service instead.

Do you need help retrieving a library item from the shelves? Contact us and we will bring it to you.

You can choose to give a friend or family member access to your library account. They can sign out items and pay library fines on your behalf.

Learning and assignment support

We are always here to provide one-on-one help with your assignments! You can contact us or find your subject librarian.

Our librarians have also created resources to help you learn at your own pace. Learn more about our self-guided assignment help.

The Learning Commons can help support you in your studies. Find help with writing, math, physics, learning strategies, motivation and more. Visit the Learning Commons on the main floor of the Mearns - McPherson Library.

Technology and tools

Learn about the assistive hardware and software that's available in our assistive tech rooms.

Find more details about the software on our computer workstations. You can also borrow laptops, cables and other tech equipment.

Locate one of our priority workstations.

How can we do better?

Do you have any ideas about how we can improve our accessibility services? Please contact Karen Munro, Associate University Librarian, Engagement & Learning. We appreciate your feedback.
