Interlibrary loan

If we don’t have the item you want in our collections, we can usually borrow it for you from another library. We also participate in lending to other libraries.

Interlibrary loan is only for items that aren’t available at UVic Libraries. Before placing a request, use Library Search to see if your item is available.

Who can use this service?

Interlibrary loan is subsidized (free to you) if you are an undergraduate or graduate student, faculty or retired faculty, staff member or UVic affiliate.

UVic alumni and community borrowers may place interlibrary loans for a fee. There is a separate process for this. Learn more about interlibrary loans for alumni and community borrowers.

Pick-up location

Digital articles and book chapters will be sent to you by email in PDF format.

Books and other physical materials can be picked up at the Ask Us Desk in the Mearns - McPherson Library or at the loan desk in the Priestly Library. You can choose your pick-up location when completing the request form.

Loan period

Books and other physical interlibrary loan items have a 4-week loan period. You may be able to renew your items for up to 4 additional weeks.

Your items will have a paper wrapper that shows the due date. Please do not remove the wrapper.

Items sent to you by email are yours to keep.

Fines

Fines for overdue interlibrary loan items are $2.00 per item per day.

If you have fines of $20.00 or more owing on your account, you will not be able to borrow materials until you have paid your fines.

Students & research assistants

Undergraduate students can only borrow from Canadian libraries. If you need an exception, ask your professor to sign a letter of permission.

If you are a research assistant, you still make interlibrary loan requests through your own account. Please fill in the form with your own Netlink ID and password.

Alumni & community

UVic alumni and community borrowers may borrow interlibrary loan materials for a fee.
