Laptops & equipment

UVic students can borrow laptops and other tech equipment from the Ask Us Desk. We have chargers, keyboards, headphones, calculators, cameras and lots of other equipment.

You can also borrow laptops and tech equipment from the front desk in the Priestly Library.

Laptops

Students can borrow a laptop for either a short-term or long-term loan. To get started:

• you need to sign a laptop agreement each year
  • visit the Ask Us Desk to fill it out
• be sure to connect to UVic WiFi the first time you log in to a borrowed laptop

Short-term loans

• loan period: 3 hours
• can only be used inside the library or the BiblioCafé
• must be returned to the Ask Us Desk 30 minutes before closing time if borrowed near the end of the day
• overdue fine: $15.00 per hour ($0.25 per minute)

Long-term loans

• loan period: 2 weeks
• can be taken home
• overdue fine: $10.00 per day

Replacement fee

If a laptop is reported lost, damaged or stolen, you may have to pay a fee of up to $2,500 to replace it. Please do not leave a borrowed laptop unattended.

Saving your files

We will erase all files left on the laptop after you return it. Please make sure to save your work before you return the laptop.

You can:

• save to your own external storage drive
• save to a cloud service like Google Docs, Dropbox or OneDrive
• email yourself an attachment
• print your files

Other equipment

Visit the Ask Us Desk to borrow tech and media equipment from the library. We have many different items available, including:

• chargers, headphones, cables and keyboards
• cameras and camcorders
• microphones and audio recorders
• tripods and adapters
• a green screen (in-library use only)
• calculators
• projectors

Loan periods for equipment vary. Some items, like cables and chargers, are 3-hour loans. Some items can be borrowed for 6 days. Check at the Ask Us Desk for details.

All tech and media equipment collects overdue fines.
