Tia's Advice: Winter Break

Tia's Advice is a section of the UVic Global Community Newsletter that includes valuable information and important dates for undergraduate and graduate international students in the following categories: degree-seeking, incoming exchange, and incoming study abroad/visiting.

The International Student Centre will be:

  • open with regular hours (9:00am to 4:30pm) on Friday, December 21
  • open with reduced hours (9:00am to 3:00pm) on Monday, December 24
  • closed for winter break Tuesday, December 25 through Tuesday, January 1
  • open with regular hours (9:00am to 4:30pm) on Wednesday, January 2

If you have urgent questions or conerns to discuss with the ISS International Student Advising team, please visit or contact the International Student Centre as soon as possible so we can assist you before winter break.

If you experience an emergency during winter break, please contact Campus Security Services.

Important Dates

December 22: Last day of first term exams for all students.

December 24: Christmas Eve.

December 25: Christmas Day.

December 25: Winter Break begins. UVic services are closed during Winter Break.

December 26: Boxing Day.

December 31: New Year's Eve.

January 1: New Year's Day.

January 2: Winter Break ends. UVic services re-open.

January 4: January Orientation.

January 4: Residence Move-In Day and Residence Orienation.

January 7: Second term classes begin for all students.

January 9 - 10: Clubs and Course Union Days in the Student Union Building.

January 11: International Student Welcome.

January 17: Last day for course changes in the Faculty of Law.

January 20: Last day for 100% reduction of tuition fees if you drop second term courses. Students must pay 50% of tuition fees for courses dropped after this date. DO NOT assume the instructor will drop you from a course if you do not attend classes. You are responsible for your own registration.*

January 20: Last day for graduate students to register in a personal leave for second term.

January 22: Change of coverage deadline for the UVSS Health and Dental Plan.**

January 22: Opt out deadline for new students who have been automatically enrolled in the guard.me@UVic plan.

January 23: Last day for adding courses that begin in second term.

January 31: Change of coverage deadline for the GSS Health and Dental Plan. **

January 31: Last day for paying second term tuition and student fees without penalty.*

* Incoming exchange students do not pay tuition fees to UVic but must pay the MTMI fee for emergency medical insurance coverage provided by the guard.me@UVic plan.

* Incoming exchange students are not automatically enrolled for the UVSS or GSS Health and Dental Plan but may be eligible to opt in during the change of coverage period if they choose to purchase a UVSS or GSS membership package.
