Tips for Success

One tip that I would offer new international students starting their program at UVic is… Don’t be afraid to venture outside of the UVic campus! Victoria is filled with local shops, nature walks, and a diverse food scene. During my time as an undergraduate international student, one of my favourite things to do was explore the city. I discovered a lot of hidden gems that I would’ve not otherwise.

One of the best ways for international students to get connected during their time at UVic would be… Exploring! Campus is vast, and that’s the fun part. I continue to discover new places and make new connections in such a diverse community every single day. Join clubs, attend events (such as the ones hosted by the Global Community), and even try out a new study spot everyday! You’ll be surprised at the different people you’ll meet.

Student Success Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for help and familiarize yourself with the different student resources that UVic offers, including us at the ICS! Reach out, attend office hours, connect with other students — you are, and deserve to feel, supported with any situation that you’re going through.

About

I have many places that I call home! I was born in Quezon City, Manila in the Philippines, and immigrated to Canada in 2010. I also completed my BA in English Language, Literature & Culture at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, WA where I was an international student myself!

My background is mainly in student support. I worked as an Undergraduate Student Assistant at the Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards at UW where I assisted with scholarship advising and office administration. I also have extensive communications experience, focusing on social media, outreach, technical writing, and web management.

I am passionate about bringing all my lived experiences and perspectives to my work! I’m grateful to be learning on Lək̓ʷəŋən and WSÁNEĆ Territories everyday.

Interests

I love everything and anything to do with creativity! Reading, writing, drawing, arts-and-crafts, video and photo editing, the list goes on… I also spend a lot of time listening to music, (re)watching movies and TV shows, playing video games, and hanging out with my dog.

Fun fact

I can play the clarinet and have been playing for ten years! On a less impressive note, I can’t swim.
