Marie Vautier

Bio

Marie Vautier has a B.A. Honours in French and English from l'université d'Ottawa, an M.A. in études françaises from l'université Laval (Québec), a certificate in pedagogy (college level) from Concordia University (Montréal) and a PhD. in Comparative Literature from the University of Toronto. She taught in a private college in Québec and a university in France before coming to the University of Victoria. Based in the Department of French, she also teaches and does graduate supervision in the English Department, and is the Adviser for the Combined Major in Canadian Literature Program for both Departments. From 2011 to 2013, she was the Chair of the Steering Committee for the inter-faculty program in Canadian Studies (Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences). Dr. Vautier is the former book review editor for the journal of the Conseil international d'études francophones and served on the Executive Council of the Association for Canadian and Québécois Literatures; she co-organized their annual conference for several years. She sits/has sat on the advisory boards of Canadian Literature, Studies in Canadian Literatures/Études en lettres canadiennes, the Comparative Canadian Literature Project (UK), and the Canadian Literature Project, Waseda University (Japan). Her main work is in contemporary literary theory. Her current research is on transcultured authors who address socio-political realities in their autobiographical fictions, through questions such as memory, religiosity, and code-switching. She is the author of New World Myth: Postmodernism and Postcolonialism in Canadian Fiction; the co-author of Art as an Early-Warning System; the co-translator of an anthology of Québécois poetry, Paris/Québec, and has written many refereed journal articles as well as refereed book chapters, which have been published in Québec, English-speaking Canada, North America, South America, Australia and Europe.
