Greek and Roman Studies Study Abroad Opportunities:

We offer two types of study abroad courses:

  • Semester in Greece 
  • GRS 495 is a Practicum in Archaeology that offers students the opportunity to experience work on an active archaeological research project. There are two sections offered in GRS 495:
  • (1) Greece: project is at the Greek site of ancient Eleon in central Boeotia, co-directed by Professor Trevor Van Damme
  • (2) Spain: project is at the Roman site of ancient Ilduro (Cabrera de Mar) in Catalonia, Spain, directed by Professor Alejandro Sinner

Interested students should contact the about study abroad opportunities. Applications dates and details will vary by year and program.


Semester in Greece 

 

Program Overview:  Usually runs from January to March and takes place in Greece.

Sample Application from previous years 

Estimated program cost: in 2019 the cost was approximately $6300, which included shared hostel at Canadian Institute in Greece for 3 months; transportation within Greece and Turkey – metro, bus, ferry; museum pass for free entry to sites and museums; hotels w/ breakfast outside Athens. 

Additional costs: Overseas airfare to Athens and UVic tuition (same as if taking courses at UVic, 7.5 units; transferable for non-UVic students). Students make travel arrangements independently. Group meets in Athens.

UVic courses offered in 2019 (subject to change):

  • GRS 361 Aegean Bronze Age (1.5 units)
  • GRS 395 Classical Studies Abroad (3.0 units)
  • GRS 462 Archaeology of Athens (1.5 units)
  • GRS 482A Seminar in Greek Archaeology (1.5 units).

No pre-requisites, however, GRS/Classics Major or Minor recommended and third-year standing is preferred.

Possible Funding Sources:

One World International Scholarship (OWIS)

  • Obtain an unofficial transcript of all your post-secondary records
  • Complete the application forms
  • Obtain two references using forms included with the OWIS application forms. One must be academic, the other non-academic.
  • Submit the application to the Global Engagement Office (Jamie Cassels Centre (JCC), Room B202) or online as a single PDF at world@uvic.ca (more information here)

To Apply to Student International Activities Fund (SIAF):

  • Fill out the application including your personal information and budget; identify references.
  • Write a 2–3-page, 12 pt. font paper on your program, resources and funding towards your program, and your motivation and predicted outcomes of you program
  • Submit the application to the Global Engagement Office (Jamie Cassels Centre (JCC), Room B202) or online as a single PDF at world@uvic.ca

The potential award for the SIAF is $500 and for the OWIS is $1000-$3500

Department of Greek and Roman Studies – Margareta von Rudloff Travel Assistance Fund:

The Department of Greek and Roman Studies invites applications for awards from the Margareta von Rudloff Travel Assistance Fund. The funding for this award comes from an endowment generously provided by Mrs. Margareta von Rudloff of Victoria, the income of which is dedicated to supporting travel needs for graduate or senior undergraduate students taking their degrees in Greek and Roman Studies, by providing funds to deliver papers at conferences, to participate in special academic programs or archaeological excavations, or to visit libraries, museums, and classical sites.  A limited amount of funds will be available
