Gender studies bursaries

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Class of 1996 Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a student in gender studies.  This bursary fund was established with money raised by women's studies students in 1996.

Estrofest/Furtado Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

A bursary is awarded to a student registered in at least one 200 level GNDR course. The recipient must also have completed at least one other gender studies course at UVic.

The Hamber Foundation Gender Studies Bursaries

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students in gender studies, with preference given to students with a declared major in this program.

The Petch Bursary in Gender Studies

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students in gender studies, with preference given to students with a declared major in this program.  This was gender studies' first bursary, established with money donated by then UVic President Howard Petch.

Michèle Pujol Bursary in Gender Studies

A bursary is awarded to a female 3rd or 4th year student in the Department of Gender Studies. Preference will be given to a lesbian, woman of a visible minority or an aboriginal woman.

Michèle Pujol was a much-loved women's studies professor from 1990 until her death in 1997.  She is the only UVic professor to have had a room in the Student Union Building named in her honour. 

Awards

Dax Gibson Memorial Award in Gender Studies

Dax Charles Gibson was a popular student who died suddenly in December 2012. The gender studies department and Equity & Outreach committee, along with Dax's family and other friends, have raised money for an award to honour Dax's memory.

One or more awards will be given annually to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Gender Studies who produce the most exceptional GNDR 400B or 499 independent research project. Students do not need to apply for this award.

Dax Gibson Memorial Award in Gender Studies and Anthropology

One or more awards will be given annually to academically outstanding undergraduate students who are pursuing a Major in gender studies, with preference given to students who have completed at least four courses in Anthropology, or who are pursuing either a Minor or Major in Anthropology. Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies. Students do not need to apply for this award.

Gender studies scholarships

Applications from students are NOT required for scholarships listed in this section.  Recipients are selected by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Gender Studies.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals and prizes.

Christine St. Peter Scholarships for Outstanding Achievement in Gender Studies

Professor Emerita Christine St. Peter was hired in 1987 as the first full-time faculty member of women's studies and served as its first Chair when we achieved department status in 1995-96.  Christine worked tirelessly on behalf of the department, our students and women at UVic until her retirement in June, 2011.  The money needed to establish this scholarship in Christine's name was donated by over 100 current and former students and colleagues.

Two scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in the Department of Gender Studies; one to an Honours or Major student in year 3 with the highest GPA in accumulated gender studies courses, and one to an Honours or Major student in year 4 with the highest GPA in accumulated gender studies courses.

Christine Welsh Scholarship for Indigenous Gender Studies Students

Christine Welsh joined Gender Studies in 1996 and was the first Indigenous faculty member in Humanities. Highly regarded as both a professor and a documentary filmmaker, Christine retired in 2016. She still meets with students as one of the Métis Elders in First Peoples House.

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate 3rd or 4th year student with a declared major in Gender Studies. Part-time students are eligible for this scholarship.

Jane Glavin St. Peter Scholarships for Academic Excellence in Gender Studies

Two scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in the Department of Gender Studies; one to an Honours or Major student in year 3 with the second highest GPA in accumulated gender studies courses and one to an Honours or Major student in year 4 with the second highest GPA in accumulated gender studies courses.
