Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Class of 1996 Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a student in Gender Studies.

Hamber Foundation Gender Studies Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Department of Gender Studies, with preference given to students with a declared major in this program.

Michèle Pujol Bursary in Gender Studies*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a woman 3rd or 4th year student in the Department of Gender Studies. Preference will be given to a lesbian, woman of a visible minority or an aboriginal woman.

Petch Bursary in Gender Studies*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students in Gender Studies, with preference given to students with a declared major in this program.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Awards, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Christine St. Peter Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement in Gender Studies*

Value: Varies | Number: 2

Two scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in the Department of Gender Studies; one to an Honours or Major student in year 3 with the highest GPA in accumulated Gender Studies courses and one to an Honours or Major student in year 4 with the highest GPA in accumulated Gender Studies courses.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.

Christine Welsh Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate students entering third or fourth year with a declared major in Gender Studies. Part-time students (minimum 6.0 units) are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.

Dax Gibson Memorial Scholarship in Gender Studies and Anthropology*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who are pursuing a Major in Gender Studies, with preference given to students who have completed at least four courses in Anthropology, or who are pursuing either a Minor or Major in Anthropology.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.

Dax Gibson Memorial Award in Gender Studies*

One or more awards are given to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Gender Studies who produce the most exceptional Gender Studies 400B independent research project and/or Gender Studies honours thesis. This award may be awarded to a graduating student.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.

Jane Glavin St. Peter Scholarship for Academic Excellence in Gender Studies*

Two scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students in the Department of Gender Studies; one to an Honours or Major student in year 3 with the 2nd highest GPA in accumulated Gender Studies courses and one to an Honours or Major student in year 4 with the 2nd highest GPA in accumulated Gender Studies courses.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Gender Studies; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

Chair in Transgender Studies Undergraduate Research Scholarship for Trans, Non-Binary and Two-Spirit Students

Value: $500 | Number: Varies

Two or more scholarships of $500 each are awarded to academically outstanding trans, non-binary or Two-Spirit undergraduate students entering third or fourth year who are pursing a degree in any field. Priority will be given to students whose studies are trans-related. Further preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Gender Studies.
