Introduction

This policy will address the School of Social Work's position with regard to cultural, religious and childcare needs as embraced by the School's equity policy.

  1. The School is committed to be open, accommodating and flexible concerning the cultural and religious needs of all instructors, staff and students.
    • The School and the University recognizes its obligations to make reasonable accommodation for students, faculty and staff whose observance of cultural and religious days might conflict with the academic requirements of a course or program or the work requirements of the School. Students who plan to be absent from classes for religious or spiritual observance are encouraged to contact their instructors in advance of their absence to discuss possible accommodative measures. This could include, for example, making arrangements to audio-tape missed classes. Faculty and staff who plan to be absent should contact the Director in advance of their absence to discuss possible accommodative measures.
    • The School recognizes smudging as a cultural practice. Smudging is accepted in designated areas. Students, faculty or staff who wish to smudge outside designated areas are asked to arrange this with the director/dean in advance.

  2. The School is committed to be accommodating and flexible regarding family and child care needs of all instructors, staff and students.
    • Children and babies are welcome in the classroom with consensual agreement of the class.
    • Flexibility to accommodate instructors and staff with their family and child care needs will be arranged in accordance with UVic Human Resources and respective union policies.
